Hairspiration from Celebs: 7 Kim Kardashian Hairstyles

Every day many people are enthralled with "googling" the personal style of reality star Kim Kardashian, and let’s face it, her hair always looks immaculate!

The queen of the selfie, Kim K, may know well the Instagram filters that bring out the best in her, but there is no denying that she has become a star style icon and is well known for having sleek, shiny and stylish locks. She turns up on the red carpet in clothes that show off her curves, make up to enhance her eyes and cheekbones, and hair that suits her face shape.

Think about your face shape before choosing a style, and check out the Infographic we’ve made for you!

In fact, we would all secretly like to see what she looks like with ‘bed hair’ just to remind us that she is normal and has bad hair days as well, just like the rest of us!

Celebrity magazines and websites closely follow, not only the wardrobe choices of Kim, but her hair and beauty choices as well. The girl knows what works for her – she keeps her hair long and makes subtle changes to the way she wears it, depending on the occasion. More often than not, she gets it just right. Whether she has gone blonde or back to her natural deep brunette shade, her thousands of fans can’t seem to get enough of her.

Now this might lead to her raking in the money when she endorses the latest hair styling products (whether she actually uses them or not is another question), but on a positive note, we have lots of inspiration when it comes to styling our own hair – and here are just a few examples, if you want to try out Kim Kardashian hairstyles:

1. Long and sleek

This is her signature look. Kim’s hair usually has subtle layers cut into the style to shape around her face and jaw line, and she often sports a middle parting. In terms of prep, this style doesn’t take too long to copy; however, it requires good conditioned hair and a bit of TLC. When washing your hair, add a deep conditioning treatment and a styling product to help you hair look shiny and sleek (such as hair oil or a spray).

When drying, use a volumizing spray and diffuser attachment and work volume in to the roots as you dry it. A good tip is to tilt your head upside down as you blast it with the heat from the hair dryer (keeping the dryer at a distance from your hair so as not to damage it with heat). Once it is dry, if you do not have naturally straight hair, it is time to add a spritz of heat protection spray and run the hair straightening iron over the hair.

Be careful not to leave the iron on the hair for too long as this might cause damage to the follicles. Finish with a defined middle parting and a mist of hair spray to keep it all in place. To keep this style looking fresh and neat, get to your salon for regular hair trims (every 6-8 weeks should do the trick).

Kim often wears this style tucked back behind her ears which adds a chic finish to the style, or why not add a pretty hair clip to the side of the hair to match your outfit?

2. Wavy/loose curls

Another fave of Kim’s is wavy, loose curls. Curling your own hair can be a little tricky, so make sure you put some time aside to practice first, or enlist the help of a friend. Simply section off the hair, into neat or random sections (depending on how formal you want to look), and curl the hair around the tongs leaving the heat to set the curls in place.

Alternatively, you can try leaving curlers in your hair for a more natural bounce. The key is in ‘fixing’ the style without leaving the hair looking like it is full of products. A light hair spray should do the trick.

3. Top Knot

An effortless look from Kim is the classic high bun. This is a practical style for the celeb mum and she often opts for it while out and about with the pram or hitting the gym. Simply scrape your hair into a high ponytail, with your fingers or a brush to smooth it down and secure with a hair tie. Then twist the hair around the hair tie and secure with grips.

Don’t worry about it looking a little messy or loose hair falling out of the bun, as this is all part of the style. The style is great for keeping your hair off your neck on a hot summer’s day and away from your face if exercising, but can look equally stylish when worn with some oversized sunglasses – just like Kim!

4. Fringe

Sometimes Kim shows off a fringe with her new hair styles. She prefers a wispy fringe which can be kept to the sides, but has also been known to sport a dramatic, sharp full set fringe. While this might not suit every face shape, a fringe can really add something to your current hairstyle and make it look modern and trendy.

When deciding what is best for you, ask your stylist for some advice on what might suit your face shape and what is best for you to maintain yourself at home. Having a fringe is a big commitment. Kim K can easily get the top stylists around to help her style it out perfectly, but for the rest of us, it can be a little trickier, so think before you let the scissors loose on your locks as they can take quite a few weeks to grow out.

5. Braids

Kim likes her braids. She has hit the red carpet with many different hair styles that include braids, from a side ponytail with a long, loose braid, to her hair down but with small braids dotted throughout in a hippy-esque style. She has also worn a braid as a hair band plaited around the top of her hair line, which is a really cute look.

For someone like Kim, who often wears similar hairstyles, braids can add that touch of difference to it. If you haven’t plaited hair before, get a section of hair and divide into three equal parts, then practise twisting these over each other. It can be a little tricky if it’s new for you, but just like tying your shoelaces, once you get the hang of it, it is a skill you’ll never forget! Once you know how to do a basic braid, you can really experiment with different looks.

6. Long high ponytail

Another classic and chic look is the high ponytail, which looks great with Kim’s long and sleek hair. The style can elongate your neck and help you look taller. She often chooses to scrape her hair up into a high ponytail, which is both practical and classy, yet suits the shape of her face.

To emulate the look, grab a brush which can smooth the hair down and brush the hair up to the crown of your head. Now, tie it securely into a high ponytail. You can secure it with a scrunchie or a clip.

Keep it in place with a touch of hair spray and either leave the ponytail straight or add curls to it with a curling iron for some extra volume. As discussed, Kim often likes to add braids to a style, so you could braid a section of the ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie and grip into place, to add a twist.

7. 50s inspired

Now the 50s had a lot of things going for them – from pretty dresses to excellent rock ’n’ roll music, and the women really knew how to wear their hair well. Just look at some of the pin up girls from that era, whose look is still just as hot today.

Kim is no stranger to copying some of the best 50s hair styles for her celeb functions, which include tight curls and beehive volume up-dos. The best way to copy these styles is to go online and google the hair styles of the 50s, and have some fun in front of the mirror trying them out on your own hair.

Why not add some 50s inspired make up and clothes, just for the hell of it! Some of the most popular hair styles, such as the tight curls and bouffant, will need some patience and a lot of hair spray, but it’s all worth the effort!

So there we have it, plenty of simple but effective styles to play around with. But the secret to Kim Kardashian’s great hair isn’t actually the styles, but the condition of the hair.

Luckily, thanks to the Internet, Kim lets us in to a few of her secrets. For example, she never washes her hair every day but opts to wash it every other day. Washing your hair every day can strip it of its natural oils and dry it out, every other day means that the oils add strength to the hair follicles. She also adds hair oil – Moroccan or Argan oil are excellent choices, to help hair look and feel soft and sleek.

Looking after your hair means watching what you eat – nutrition can make a huge difference to the condition of your hair, so be sure to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables to add important vitamins and minerals to your diet. It is easy to get carried away with products and heat on your hair, but try not to over-use sprays and limit the amount of heat you apply to it.

If you need to use heat, always use a heat protecting spray first and a deep conditioning treatment once a week or once a fortnight. Once you have got the condition of your hair just right, maintain it with regular trims and do not dye it too often. You now have the perfect base to get styling and looking like a star!

Now let’s face it, Kim Kardashian can afford the best hair stylists around, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t copy her looks yourself. Luckily, she is one celebrity who opts for simple yet elegant styles that last the test of time … and with a bit of practise, you can perfect them yourself pretty quickly.
