6 Effective Ways How to Treat Excessively Dry Skin

Dry skin could be a really big problem. Sometimes, it’s not just esthetics; your skin actually starts to hurt. Luckily, there is something you can do. Here are six incredibly effective ways to treat excessively dry skin.

1. Prevention

Of course it is always better to prevent than to cure, and this stands for taking care about your skin too. Dry skin can be prevented with proper protection.

Make sure that you always protect your skin from the elements. Sun, wind, cold, rain and air conditioners can do some serious damage to your skin. Keep your skin protected, especially during the winter months when it is really cold. Don’t go out with uncovered skin and wear gloves and scarves.

Make sure you protect your skin from the sun too, because it will make your skin dry. Never go out without sunscreen and try not to stay in the sun for too long. Forget about insanely bronze color, and absolutely forget about tanning booths. Not only that they make your skin dry, they can also give you cancer.

2. Natural Products

Every winter was a nightmare for my skin until I discovered that natural soaps and shower gels are my new best friends. When it comes to treating excessively dry skin, there is really no better cure.

Natural and organic soaps and shower gels are free of all those things that could actually make your skin even dryer. I’ve found out that those with goat milk work best for me, and I have to recommend those. Also, it’s best to buy those that are unscented, because the things that are used for scenting could add to the dryness of your skin.

3. Moisturizers with Shea Butter and Maple Syrup

shea butter

I’ve already mentioned Shea butter as being one of the best things for treating dry skin. Now, I’d like to add maple syrup to that too.

It’s best to use organic Shea butter, but if you can’t afford it, moisturizers with Shea butter and maple syrup will do the trick. They don’t even have to be too strong – Garnier Skin Naturals Body Repair Lotion with maple syrup or Garnier Intensive 7 Days Repairing Lotion with Shea butter will be just fine.

4. Stay Hydrated

Inner hydration is just as important as outer when it comes to treating excessively dry skin. Try to drink between 6-8 glasses of water every day and keep your skin moisturized.

Remember, that for every cup of coffee you drink you’ll need two cups of water just to take back the fluids that coffee took from you. Same goes for tea and alcohol. Try to drink mostly water and fresh organic juices.

When it comes to keeping your skin hydrated, there are two separate opinions. Some people think that you should always keep your skin hydrated while others say that you should actually leave your skin to learn how to defend itself. This in my opinion can go only if you have small problems with dry skin. If your skin is really dry, not trying to rehydrate it will only result in painful cracks.

5. Stay Away from Hot Tubs

Not only hot tubs, hot water in general. That means long hot showers and long hot baths too, no matter how much we all love them.

Showering actually takes the moisture pout of your skin and showering with really hot water is even worse. Don’t ever let yourself come out of the bathroom with red skin. Take one shower a day, two at most. Neither of them should last for more than 10 minutes.

6. Don’t Over Exfoliate

A lot of women think that they should exfoliate their skin daily, in order to prevent, or cure the dryness. This is actually totally wrong, because over exfoliation could bring more bad than good.

Whenever you exfoliate your skin, you take off the dead cells. This is completely fine, as long as you’re not doing it more than twice a week. Exfoliating more often actually damages the living cells and that results in your skin being red and dry. Always apply moisturizer after exfoliation.

Follow these six steps and you will see how treating excessively dry skin is not really that hard. Sure, there are things that need to be done, but it’s not like you need to bend over backwards to achieve them. Still, if none of them help, your problem could be more serious and you need to schedule a visit to your dermatologist.
