A Complete Guide To Summer Accessories

When the sun comes out, it’s hard to resist wanting to revamp your wardrobe. Accessories are a more affordable way to add a summer glow to old favorites!

Whether you are headed to the beach, traveling or just exploring your own city, a cute book bag, bold sunglasses or a headpiece can make it feel like it’s officially summer. These are some of my tips and tricks to finding the perfect accessory, be it functional, adorable, or both!

Backpacks

I recently moved to a larger city, and one of my favorite discoveries has been the backpack! I didn’t even carry a book bag when I was in high school, but because I ditched my car, it’s so convenient to be hands-free and have the space to carry a few larger items that may not fit into a more traditional purse.

A mini leather backpack is my perfect bag. It has enough space for everything you normally carry plus a little more. The leather (or faux leather) makes it look more fashionable than functional, and the ability to pack sunscreen, a small jacket or some snacks is great for a day out in the sun!

If your day trip is a little more involved or you just need more space, I love having a bigger backpack in the lineup. Many accessory stores now stock backpacks in metallic finishes and cute patterns.

I also think it’s great to have a graphic tote on hand for the impromptu trip to the beach. You know the one when you’re scrambling around the house trying to find something big enough to hold your towel! Many stores have really great, affordable options this time of year. If you see one, pick it up—you’ll thank me later!

Sunglasses

Gold Aviators. There’s not much else to be said about it; everyone needs a pair!

In addition to the staple gold aviators, it’s fun to go out of your comfort zone and try something new and bold! Be it a really large or colorful frame, cat eye shape or pattern, bold sunglasses will stand out when you’re too warm to put on a cute, summery outfit.

Double bridge sunglasses have also made a big appearance this summer. These are a great alternative to the aviator if you don’t want to go too bold. The bridge adds interest without it being too out there.

Hats

Hats are an easy option to throw on to add some interest to your outfit, but also help to keep you cool and the sun out of your eyes!

Baseball hats are great when you just can’t be bothered to style your hair. If you don’t have a favorite sports team or want something more ‘fashionable,’ I suggested finding one in leather or a suede fabric. That way, it is both casual and feminine.

Another great option is a floppy hat. I suggested getting one in a material other than straw; that way you can rock it in the fall as well!

Beach Wear

A shift dress is a perfect option to transition between the beach and not the beach! It’s comfortable and roomy enough to wear over a swimsuit, but once the beach day is over and you have to go, no one will know you spend the day lounging on the sand.

There are very few times and places wearing a crochet cover up is appropriate—now is the time! They are incredibly cute to wear while you want to cover up but still show off.

Long sleeveless vests have become a new favorite of mine this summer! They add a little extra to any maxi or midi dress, without adding too much warmth. They are also beautiful when paired with a tank top, jeans and heels for an evening dinner. The best part is that they are double duty because they easily transition into your fall wardrobe.

Jewelry

I cannot get enough of midi rings. I love wearing them all year round, but summer is a fun time to play around with mixing metal, shapes, sizes and styles. I like to mix both midi and traditional rings for an eclectic look.

As mentioned above, the ‘90s are back in full force and that means chokers are, too. There is such a great variety available depending on your personal style. Thick black velvet to dainty gold chains, you’d be surprised how well they add flair to any of the outfits in your closet.

Smaller dainty pieces are also fun to mix and match during summer. Pair short necklaces with longer necklaces for a layered, bohemian look.

Hair jewelry has also made a comeback. Decorative bobby pins with metal designs or flowers are an easy way to make your look festival ready.

Summer is the perfect to experiment and play with color! Comment below with your favorite accessories.
