Kate Moss Style: 4 Memorable Looks from the Quintessential “It” Girl

The personal style of Kate Moss has been a fashion talking point for a few decades now, and shows no signs of slowing down. Here are some of our favorite Moss moments.

Kate Moss at the Glastonbury festival, Kate Moss and Johnny Depp, Kate Moss stepping out for a night on the town in London…these are but a few of the images that have been burnt into the minds of those of us who love fashion.

For whatever reason, Ms. Moss is just one of those rare birds who are able to wake up in the morning, throw on anything they happen to find lying around, and look so incredibly chic you might swear that you could hear the fashion angels weeping.

The Kate Moss style has changed over the years and has made headlines time and time again. Never mind that these same looks have sent those of us lesser mortals running for the shops for those must-have items.

That pair of welly boots and those cut off denim shorts will never look the same to you again. While it would certainly be a difficult task to pick one of Ms. Moss’s looks that we think is the best of all time, there are definitely a few that really stand out amongst them all.

1. Glastonbury

Probably the most copied of all of Kate Moss’s looks, her Glastonbury pairings of Hunter wellies, short denim cut-offs, bohemian blouses, and menswear-inspired vests became the standard festival-goer’s uniform overnight, and remain so to this day.

The look is comfortable, practical, and (we never thought we’d say this about a look built around a pair of muddy rubber boots) more than a little bit sexy. Nowadays, you can’t turn around at a festival without bumping into at least three people dressed in the Moss Glastonbury uniform.

2. The Met Gala 2006

The Met Gala is traditionally an event where attendees are expected to take a no-holds-barred approach to dressing. At this much-anticipated event, attendees have an opportunity to pull out all the stops and bring out their boldest, most off the wall looks.

Perhaps it is this sentiment of creative freedom that made it all the more notable when Ms. Moss showed up at the 2006 Gala wearing a sleek black Burberry tuxedo (perfectly tailored, no less), complete with skinny leather trousers!

3. The Met Gala 2009

Moss once again stunned at the Met a mere three years later when she appeared on the arm of Marc Jacobs wearing – you guessed it, Marc Jacobs. Moss created waves in the one-shouldered, gold lame draped Grecian sheath, and really upped the ante by pairing the high kilowatt ensemble with a pair of matching stilettos and a turban. Yes, that’s right, a turban.

Taken straight out of the 80’s playbook, this is one look that really polarized her audience. There were the detractors (the turban in particular seemed to really put them out of sorts), but just as many people found it to be a stroke of pure, 24 karat (sorry, couldn’t resist) sartorial genius. No matter which camp you fall into, you have to agree that the look is nothing if not memorable.

4. The Topshop debut

In 2006, a rumor was swirling around the fashion world that Kate Moss was going to be collaborating with UK high street giant Topshop. Moss herself added fuel to the smoldering rumor fires when she appeared at the retailer’s fashion show wearing a simple grey t-shirt, wide leg jeans, and a pair of platform sandals.

The look was a simple, seventies-inspired tome, and one that was the polar opposite of the skinny jeans that had come to be associated with her personal style.

There is an effortless ease in the simplicity of this look, and the wide leg, higher belted waist, and deconstructed, wide neckline balance the silhouette perfectly. However, the uniqueness of this look lies not in the simplicity of it, but in the timing. After all, we’ve seen this look before, on fashion icons ranging from Jane Birkin to Rachel Zoe.

What makes it special this time is that it provides us a window of understanding into Moss’s process. Moss has always been a keen observer of the public’s reaction to her own sartorial choices, and on this occasion she gave her audience exactly the opposite of what they were expecting – classic Moss indeed.

Nobody who loves and follows fashion would ever make the argument that Kate Moss has only four memorable looks. In fact, there have been so many memorable looks over the years, it’s impossible to keep them straight.

To be honest, the same could be said just about every time Ms. Moss steps out, she does so in a way that inspires fashion lovers to covet her look, and fashion retailers to copy it. Kate Moss, now 41 years old, continues to make fashion headlines, and we look forward to what the future will bring.
