9 Wardrobe Essentials Every Woman Should Own

Some items never go out of style and you can use them all your life. These are the ones you’ll find in every woman’s wardrobe from her teens for life.

Women and clothes: it is a relationship as old as humanity itself. The only reason we have dresses today is thanks to women. Men may have found it okay to run around it deer skins, but not women. Women were a bit more conscious about what was in their wardrobe even back in the days of the dinosaurs. (We are sure, somewhere out there, there is a prehistoric cave with a walk-in wardrobe).

Women’s fashion, thankfully, is not as limited as men’s, but that also makes women’s life that much harder. How do you decide what stays in your closet and what gets thrown out as the years pass?

There are some evergreen clothing items that stay in women’s wardrobes from the hay days of high school until the end of days, but then there are also many choices. However, since we all do not have walk-in closets the size of ballrooms, let’s talk about nine wardrobe essentials all women love.

1. Leather jackets

Leather jackets are what we call time immemorial. From the classic movie Grease to Kate Beckinsale in Underworld, leather jackets have shown time and time again that they are truly the definition of uber cool. Leather jackets always look classy, and are quite good at what a jacket is supposed to do—keep you warm.

2. Wrap dress

Forty years ago, Diane Von Furtenberg designed the iconic wrap dress. Forty years later, it is still a fashion icon. There is a wrap dress for everyone. For the bright and vibrant personality types there are floral printed wrap dresses. Wear them in autumn with over-the-knee boots, an effortless look that will have heads turning. Or, you can opt for a single tone straight hemline wrap—there is beauty in simplicity.

3. A plain white t-shirt

We do not show enough love to plain white t-shirt. There is nothing more versatile. It is like a trusty friend that is always there for you. You can tuck it into a skirt, wear it over your jeans or just chuck one over a tank top. There is nothing more classic than a white t-shirt.

4. Classic black pants

When you have a white t-shirt in your wardrobe, you definitely need to pair it with a pair of classic black pants. Black pants are a wardrobe staple that offer many choice: you can choose a high waist cut, a low rise or even the wide leg. Pair them with a silk blouse and be the smartest person on a casual office Saturday.

5. Classic pumps

Women and heels is a love story for the ages. There is something about them that makes women feel and look great. They say that this is the year of the flats, but heels are evergreen. No wardrobe is complete without a pair of black or grey pumps. You can rock them in the office and in the club on a Friday night.

6. A letterman jacket

A letterman jacket screams high school. You are never too old for nostalgia. A letterman jacket is not just a throwback to the old teenage days; it also still looks good—and who says you have to keep on wearing the old school letterman jacket with your high school football team’s logo on it?

7. A white shirt

Where there is a white t-shirt, there is a white shirt. You cannot wear a t-shirt everywhere, after all. Plus, some days, you just feel like wearing a nice crisp white shirt over a pair of denim jeans. That is a look that never goes out of style.

8. The little black dress

The little black dress has been described as an enigma. It is said that the little black dress is easily the blandest element of a women’s wardrobe, yet it is a timeless piece that always manages to capture the spirit of the times. It has been around since 1926, and to date, it is one of the best choices for a Christmas party. Whether you are 16 or 40, this is a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe.

9. A trench coat

Mystery, romance and adventure—this is what a trench coat promises. In 1942, Casablanca featured Humphrey Bogart in a trench coat, beginning our love affair with trench coats. If the appeal of Casablanca is not enough, Meryl Streep donned her white Donna Karan trench coat in The Devil Wears Prada, reigniting the appeal of the trench coat.

Of course, there are many more items you’re likely to find in a women’s wardrobe over the years, but these are the classic that no wardrobe should be without. What would you add to the list? Let us know by commenting below.
