The 20 Most Important Things You Need in Your Winter Wardrobe

Winter has come, and with it a lot of chunky clothing. But, this doesn't mean you can’t be fashionable and look good in some cute winter outfits.

Winter is a time for layering, big chunky scarves, pumpkin spice lattes and… grey. Even with all the fun that winter brings it can be hard to keep our wardrobe from looking as drab as the weather. Here are some cute winter outfit pieces to help you spice up your wardrobe, get some use out of your winter closet, and recycle those pieces from last winter that you may be over already.

Coats

Lets be honest… it’s easy to get bored with outerwear. More often than not we want a coat that we can wear with everything so we stick to grey, brown, black, etc.; because we know we can just pop it on without thinking about it.

This winter lets us bring in a dash of color. Here are a few great color options and outerwear pieces that still look good with just about everything! When you are picking out colorful outerwear pieces keep in mind that the tone and undertone are important. Choose tones and undertones that work well with your skin tone and hair color.

Burnt orange

When choosing a good burnt orange jacket or cardigan, look for an orange that has a more brown tone rather than red. It will be easier to style with your brown booties and is more likely to compliment your skin tone. This color is such a great transition from fall to winter.

Try a long burnt orange coat with some high waist skinny jeans and heels. Long jackets with heels have an awesome way of elongating your figure! Try not to bog this look down with boots as it can make you appear stumpy. A low neckline will also help to elongate your legs as it brings the focus to your waist.

Burgundy

Burgundy is another great color to add to your fall wardrobe. You can wear it very well next to your deep plum, Mauve and (if you find a purple toned burgundy) hot pink lip colors!

Fur trim

Try a jacket with a fur or faux fur trim. It is better to keep these jackets on the shorter side as it’s easy to go full-animal when you’re trying to rock fur.

Last season coats

Don’t want to commit to fur? You can buy the fur (or faux fur!) and trim separate instead! This is a fun and trendy way to play up some of your old coats without having to spend a lot of money and you can use it with a lot of different jackets, not just the one.

There are so many options on how to use them too. Some can have buttons, zippers and ribbons to tie them in the front or fur scarves that can also be infinity scarves. They come in all kinds of different colors: Cheetah, black, grey, and brown! So cute! There is sure to be a color and style that will suit your wardrobe.

Buttons are also a great way to change up coats from seasons past. Go to any local fabric/ craft store and browse the button aisle. You’ll be surprised by how easy it is to give your old coats and jackets a whole new feel. Tip: Add a colorful teal button to a grey coat for a sweet pop of summer color!

Belts

Belts are a great way to change up cardigans and coats and to emphasize your silhouette. Even jackets that come with a waist tie can be modified with different belts to change up the jacket. It’s such an easy way to freshen up your coats from last year, add a pop of color or elongate your legs!

Tops

Chunky sweaters

Chunky sweaters have been a winter staple since…well, every winter from as far as I can remember. Pair your chunky sweater with that faux fur trim you got to spice up your coats from last season and you’ve got an unbelievably comfy and stylish new way to wear it.

Also try a colored chunky sweater. If you don’t like wearing so much color in the winter then you can dress it down with a large neutral scarf. We know we’re going to wear baggy sweaters… so why not try new things with them!

Deep v-neck shirts

Black and white deep v neck shirts

Deep V-neck or plunging neck sweaters and blouses are great for the winter. They show a little bit of skin and, if worn correctly, can elongate your figure and make you look slender. When warn with ankle skimming pants, they draw the attention to your waist. Wear them with high waist pants or a belt to accentuate it.

Dresses

Sweater dresses

Sweater dresses are great because they can be worn over jeans or leggings. So, they are either a shirt or a dress in a lot of ways. They’re a perfect transitional item that can be worn for many seasons. We love sweater dresses with leggings, thigh high boots (or thigh high socks) and a big bag.

Winter maxi dress

Don’t even think about retiring your summer maxi dresses this winter. Play them up with tiny cardigans or sweaters and big scarves! Tip: When picking a good sweater to wear with your maxi dress, choose a sweater that has some elastic at the bottom and ends at your waist.

This will break up the silhouette and give you some curves! You can also do this with a belt. Just tuck a little bit of the sweater in the belt. Also, if you have a short, off-the-shoulder sweater try it out with this look. You’ll be surprised by how effortlessly beautiful you will look!

Footwear

I don’t know about you, but my go-to shoes are always long boots for winter. They seem to go just right with everything and keep my feet warm in case of rain or snow. But this season it’s time to change it up. Here are a few ways to have fun with your footwear!

Heels

Go metallic. Okay, I know what you’re thinking: Metallic? No thanks! Hear me out though. Pop some metallic silver pumps next to your black pea coat, black jeans, and evergreen scarf with some silver jewelry and all the sudden you’ve got people on the street stopping to stare. Metallic heels can make an otherwise boring outfit really interesting and fun!

Boots

Two stylish above the knee boot outfits

My new favorite kind of boot is the just-over-the-knee length. It’s not as dressed up as the full on thigh-high cut, yet not as casual as the basic knee-high. Wear them with your favorite mini skirt or your favorite pair of jeans and a loose blouse.

I’m also crazy about color-blocked booties this winter. It’s an easy way to add just a little bit of color and fun to your wardrobe. A great pair of booties never hurt anybody.

Sandals with socks

This style might not be for everyone but I love it! Upgrade your Birkenstocks with some chunky socks and your boyfriend jeans for an absolutely comfy, “this is how I woke up this morning” look.

Another way to rock your summer looks is to wear your heels with socks. This is also a great way to transition from fall to winter when it’s not super cold yet. It also allows you not to have to give your favorite summer shoes up for a whole season! You can dress them up in different ways by choosing different textures, patterns, and colors of socks. It really gives a whole new look to your heels!

Legs

Ripped jeans

Ripped, distressed jeans are a great transitioning item for your wardrobe. They give off that eternal summer vibe on those bright sunny winter days when the sun is shining but the wind is still brisk. Pair them up with a great pair of booties or some socks with sandals to cover your feet while you show some leg.

Textured pants

Textured crushed velvet pants

Give me some crushed velvet jeans, some pointy shoes and a bomber jacket and I’m ready for anything this season has to throw at me. Textured pants are a great way to add some dimension to your style. Velvet, crushed velvet, leather, suede… you name it! Don’t get bored with being covered up. Play around with new textures to keep things interesting!

Animal print

Generally, we see a lot of animal prints during the summer, but this winter, animal prints are back. We saw animal prints on the runway at New York fashion week for outerwear, but you can wear them however you want. I suggest wearing some cheetah print skinny jeans. It will be visible under your jacket and all your layers, so the pop of print will be really eye catching.

Ankle skimmers

Ankle skimmers are leg thinners. Show a little skin this winter with your favorite ankle skimmers or rock your newly found love for socks-with-sandals. Ankle skimmers have a special way of elongating the legs and showcasing that beautiful ankle cleavage we all love. They also give a dainty silhouette to some of the rather boxy winter coats.

Lips

Winter is a great time to play up your lip colors. Those bright reds and corals you wore in the summer are toning down and getting cooler. Here are my favorite lip colors for this season!

Deep plum

Deep plum lipstick perfect for winter

Plum lip colors in winter never go out of style. It’s so easy to pull off a vamp lip during this season! If you can catch it before it’s too late, pick up MAC Cosmetics limited edition deep plum shade called Living Legend. This matte lip color is the perfect plum!

Milky mauves

Finally found that perfect, Kylie Jenner mauve lip color? Don’t retire it yet. This neutral mauve tone is a great addition to your winter wardrobe. I suggest looking for mauve tones with purple-brown undertones rather than pink-red undertones.

The purple undertones will make your teeth look extra white! Try MAC Cosmetics Viva Glam VI (Lustre) shade that is terracotta-plum with pearl coloring.

Hot pinks

This is a color that is least expected during the winter… which is why it’s the greatest! Warm up your winter with just a little dash of hot pink on your lips. Hot pink lip colors with a blue undertone will counteract the yellow on your teeth and make them look whiter!

Try MAC Cosmetics Boutique Pink from the Mineralize rich lipstick collection. It is the perfect bright blue pink shade!

Accessories

Leather gloves

When I was a child my mother used to wear these bright red leather gloves. They looked so great with everything she wore. I’ve been looking for a great pair of red leather gloves ever since I can remember.

They’re hard to find, but when you do find the perfect pair of leather gloves (no matter what the color) they will keep your hands ultra warm, elongate your fingers and, if you buy them new rather than vintage, you might be able to find a pair that you can use with your touch screen phone! Isn’t that perfect?

So, this season, stray away from those cheap knit gloves and class your hands up with some leather or faux leather gloves.

Bright colored jewelry

Winter sweaters paired with statement necklaces

In the last few summers we’ve seen a lot of bright colored costume jewelry gracing the aisles of our favorite department stores. These statement pieces match the sun in the summer when bright colors are easy to wear.

So, how can we wear them in the winter? Put on your favorite baggy sweater, a bright colored statement piece necklace with some skinny jeans and bright colored shoes. The broken up bits of color around your neck and your feet will really bring your whole look together and beautifully brighten your outfit. Try this style with red jewelry and shoes for a perfect holiday look!

You’re ready!

We’ve covered coats and jackets, pants and shoes all the way up to your lips. Remember to have fun with colors, textures and new silhouettes this season. Winter is the perfect time to play around with clothes because you get to wear a great number of them.

Don’t be afraid to add some color to the sometimes dull winter world. You’ll be surprised by how wearing something bright and fun on a winter day can brighten not only your day, but also the day of the people that surround you! Get out there and shine with your new cute winter outfits!
