Top Movie Fashion Inspirations

Movies not only offer a fantastic escape from the world around us, but great fashion inspiration, too. Here are the top movies to inspire your wardrobe this season!

Movies are a great way to escape from reality—to delve into a fantasy world for a couple of hours and abandon the stresses and tensions of reality. Another great reason for settling down with some popcorn and your PJs is to scope out some styling tips courtesy of Hollywood.

Here are some of the top movie fashion inspirations that have enthused their audience with their amazing style.

1. Clueless

Two decades later and Clueless still manages to inspire and impress with its high fashion and ‘90s cool. From quirky tweeds to plaid, this film encapsulates what the ‘90s had to offer fashion.

The colors were bold and the baggy jeans sported by the high school boys in the film were the epitome of ‘90s California. More than just a fashion inspiration, this movie was a cult hit and is still referenced in popular culture today.

2. Dazed & Confused

Set during a 1970’s summer, Dazed & Confused was a massive offbeat hit that not everybody knows about it, but everybody knows the fashion.

From the washed out printed t-shirts to the slogan sweatshirts (that are an ever popular designer and high street favorite), Dazed & Confused summarizes retro cool. We implore you to watch this film and not want to go and buy some woven belts and acid wash jeans.

This film also offers a young up-and-coming cast, who were relatively unknown when it was released in the early ‘90s, including a young Milla Jovovich. Well worth a watch even if you’ve seen it before.

3. The Devil Wears Prada

There couldn’t be a movie fashion inspiration list without this title on there. Bringing high fashion to a new generation, The Devil Wears Prada contrasted (and perhaps converted) the grunge-like fashion that was so popular upon its release.

Teens became aware of the beauty of a pair of Jimmy Choos and were in awe at the wonder of Chanel bags—all because of the wisdom of this film. The movie even inspired subtle fashion changes to the mainstream, such as the in-Vogue style of glasses that were widespread before it’s release.

4. Black Swan

This dark, artsy film was a smash hit with creative moviegoers as well as the avid flick fan. Maybe the sultry, mysterious fashion exuded from the film had something to do with that? From the elegant ballerina costumes to the subtle accessories that accompanied them – the style was graceful and memorable.

5. Pulp Fiction

This is an iconic classic that many people cite as their favorite film of all time. Bursting with wearable fashion, nostalgia and and urge to be Uma Thurman, this film really should be on your ‘must-watch’ list if you haven’t already seen it.

Cool cotton dresses, laidback denim shirts, bang-on-tend bomber jackets and Uma Thurman’s well-fitting wardrobe mean that this film will have you hitting the rewind button.

6. The Addams Family

The go-to look for pale skin, dark hair and draping with black attire. Wear this look with some dark Jackie O-inspired glasses for added mystery.

Morticia Addams, whether she cares or not, is something of a modern day cult fashionista. The deep-red lipstick and flowing black dress is an elegant way to ooze sophistication while occupying a look that will never age. Morticia was really onto something, and continues to inspire moviegoers and fashion followers to this day.

7. Pretty in Pink

You don’t need to be an ‘80s child to know the influence Molly Ringwald had on fashion not only in the ‘80s, but as a big part of pop culture that has neatly transcended over to fashion today.

Edgy fashion with a feminine side is a look that Molly Ringwald excelled at. Even though we have used Pretty in Pink as the movie of choice here, there are plenty of her other ‘80s classics to get your fashion fix from—most notably The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, where Ringwald’s mix of masculine and feminine works seamlessly.

Ringwald also had a penchant in a lot of her movies to wear her own DIY clothes. Although she did a fantastic job, it may not motivate you to reach for the sowing machine yourself to create some bespoke outfits.

8. Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion

As well as being comedy gold, this dryly funny movie is also a sleeper hit with a killer wardrobe. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino star as two best friends who are ditzy and going nowhere in life—until their high school reunion prompts them to better themselves.

Sparkly, body contouring dresses, glittering skirts and low cut tops are a staple in the wardrobe of Romy and Michelle. Bright colours are accompanied by even brighter personalities, so even if you don’t dare to dress like this pair, this film is still sure to brighten your day anyway.

That concludes the Top 8 Movie Fashion Icons. From grunge to high fashion, who’s style will you be taking inspiration from?
