4 Tips on Making Pizza at Home

I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t love pizza. What’s not to love about juicy dough covered in tomato ketchup, ham, mushrooms and cheese? It doesn’t get much better than that, unless, you make pizza yourself from scratch. Then it is much better. Homemade pizza is million times better than anything you can order from a pizza delivery service. A lot of people think that it’s hard to make pizza at home, but it’s really not. Here are some tips on making pizza at home.

1. Fresh Dough

The most important ingredient of every good pizza is the dough. The things you put on top of it are really not much in your control – you buy them from the store. The dough is the key.

The best recipe for homemade pizza dough goes as follows. Heat up 1l of milk and dissolve one package of fresh yeast and 125gr of butter in it. Leave it until the yeast creates foam. Add two eggs and start slowly adding flower. The dough is ready once it stops sticking to your fingers.

Leave the dough to rise for at least half an hour in a warm place. Knead it a little more. You don’t need to toss it around in the air to make it good. You can simply put it on a baking sheet and use your fingers to stretch it till the edges.

Always make fresh pizza dough. It is so much better than frozen. Make the amount that is enough for one meal and next time you feel like eating pizza – make yourself fresh dough again.

2. Try Tomato Sauce

American pizza is made with ketchup. Italian pizza however is made with tomato sauce and Italians tend to get really mad if someone asks for ketchup on their pizza. Try making your pizza with tomato sauce instead of with ketchup.

Let me be clear on something – there’s nothing wrong with ketchup on your pizza. I love it. But if you’re in a mood for something new – tomato sauce might just be the thing. Take one can of canned tomatoes and put them in a blender together with the juice. Smear the mixture of chopped tomatoes and the juice from the can across your pizza dough and add the rest of the ingredients. I also always like to add fresh tomatoes in the end.

3. Mozzarella Cheese

mozzarella cheese

The cheese that goes on pizza is mozzarella. Anything else can pass, but it is simply not as good as mozzarella.

The main reason for this is that mozzarella melts in a very specific way. It creates that delicious layer of cheese that stretches as you try to chew a piece off. This is one of the best things about pizza, don’t you think?

Another great fact about mozzarella is that it is actually lower in fat and calories than many other yellow cheese types you may put on pizza. So, if you’re looking for a healthier variation – mozzarella is the best choice.

4. Try Something New

The best reason for making pizza at home is the chance to always try something new. You can even make a couple of different pizzas all at once and try different ingredients.

Try pizza with homemade sausages, try putting paprika and red onions on top, try anything that crosses your mind. I have to suggest trying to make the dough with white wine, of course if you’re not cooking for kids. The taste is really different but quite exquisite. The recipe is very simple, you just need to mix together 250gr of flour, 4 eggs, 150ml of olive oil and 150ml of white wine.

Experiment with spices. You don’t always have to put oregano on your pizza. Try basil next time and add some other spices you like. Try chicken or smoked turkey pizza. Everything is allowed and you are more than welcome to experiment.

Believe me that homemade pizza is really a much better choice than ordering. Pizza you order can be made with bleached flour and a bunch of other stuff that are bad for you. Follow these four tips and the pizza you make at home will not be considered as junk food at all.

How did it turn out?
