The concept of wraps largely comes from Mexican, Greek, Turkish, and Kurdish cultures who have been preparing wrap-like meals since the early 20th century. Nowadays, it is quite often used as an alternative to the usual sandwich. Like sandwiches, you can use all sorts of ingredients in a wrap.

But of course, many health bars these days like to market wraps as a health food. Frankly, it has nothing to do with the wraps but more to do with what goes in it. And to ensure that they are healthy yet yummy to suit your taste, here are a few recipes for you to try at home.

Why mediterranean? Because this is known as a healthy diet to follow since it incorporates the very basics of eating well including ingredients like olive oil and fresh vegetables. Here are 4 delicious mediterranean wrap recipes to enjoy:

#1 Mediterranean Chicken Wrap Recipe:

This recipe is for those of you who like having some meat in your meals, providing protein, which in turn helps keep the hunger away for a longer period.

Ingredients (serves 2):

  • 4 10-inch wraps or tortillas (plain or flavored)
  • 450g of chicken strips
  • ½ cup of chopped parsley
  • ½ cup of chopped fresh mint leaves
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 2 tbsp of lemon juice
  • ½ tsp of salt
  • 1 medium tomato, cubed
  • 1 cup of baby spinach

Steps:

1. In a mixing bowl, combine the parsley, mint leaves, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and salt and mix well.

2. Add the chicken strips to the above mixture.

3. Heat up a non-stick skillet, and cook the flavored chicken strips over medium heat until they are cooked through.

4. Lay out the wraps on a flat surface. Divide the cooked chicken strips, the baby spinach and cubed tomatoes equally amongst the 4.

5. Roll up each wrap like a burrito. Make sure the sides are tucked in firmly to hold the ingredients.

TIP: To serve in a presentable manner, you can cup it in half at a 45 degree angle.

#2 Mediterranean Hummus Wrap Recipe:

Ingredients (serves 2):

  • two 10-inch wraps or tortillas (plain or flavoured)
  • ½ cup of hummus
  • 2 large-sized lettuce leaves
  • ¼ cup of roasted red peppers (preserved in oil)
  • ¼ cup of greek olives, pitted
  • ¼ cup of sun-dried tomatoes (preserved in oil)
  • ½ cup of shredded emmental cheese

Steps:

1. Drain the oil from the roasted red pepper and sun-dried tomatoes.

2. Lay out the wraps on a flat surface.

3. Spread the hummus evenly on the lower half of each wrap.

4. Place a lettuce leaf on top of each wrap where the hummus was spread.

5. Divide the red peppers, Greek olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and emmental cheese evenly between the two wraps.

6. Roll up each wrap like a burrito. Make sure the sides are tucked in firmly to hold the ingredients.

  • two 10-inch wraps or tortillas (plain or flavoured)
  • ½ cup of feta cheese
  • 1 medium ripe avocado, cut into strips
  • 1 tbsp of lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 cup of rocket salad leaves

Steps:

1. In a mixing bowl, mix the olive oil and lemon juice together.

2. Add the rocket salad leaves and ensure they are well coated by the dressing.

3. Lay out the wraps on a flat surface.

4. Divide the coated rocket salad leaves, feta cheese and avocado strips between the two wraps.

5. Roll up each wrap like a burrito, and make sure the sides are tucked in firmly to hold the ingredients.

#4 Pesto Goat Cheese Aubergine Wrap Recipe:

Ingredients (serves 2):

  • two 10-inch wraps or tortillas (plain or flavored)
  • 4-6 tbsp of pesto sauce (amount to your liking)
  • ¼ cup of roasted aubergines (preserved in oil), drained and cut into strips
  • ½ cup of fresh goat cheese, chopped
  • 1 cup of rocket salad leaves

Steps:

1. Lay out the wraps on a flat surface.

2. Spread the pesto evenly on the bottom half of the wraps.

3. Divide the roasted aubergines, goat cheese and rocket salad leaves equally between the two wraps.

4. Roll up each wrap like a burrito. Make sure the sides are tucked in firmly to hold the ingredients.
