Top 19 Must-Watch Movies of 2015 (So Far)

Are you a total movie buff. Well then you’re in the right place. Here are the best movies of 2015 so far.

Instead of telling you what I think the best movies of 2015 are, I’ve decided to hit the streets (namely the net) and see which movies are in high demand.

#1 Fast and Furious 7

I have to admit I am a major fan of this franchise. All the racing, performance cars, and deadly stunts just make my heart soar. Also, this is a nice homage to Paul Walker; it gives him a nice send off. At its core, this movie is about Shaw’s brother attempting to exact revenge from the gang for crippling his baby brother; he does this by killing Han. Naturally, the gang retaliates and mayhem ensues. Cue the explosions, car chases and near death experiences. This movie is out right now so go and see it. I highly recommend it – especially with an 8th instalment coming in 2017.

#2 Cinderella

Magic shoes in midnight

This is a classic fairy tale. There’s no new perspective, twist or plot change. It’s a straight up classic remake. It’s not really my thing as there isn’t anything new that’s been added to the story, but if you’re into classics then this is the movie for you – from evil stepmother to glass slippers that somehow don’t cause smelly feet (magic?). I should mention though that I do like the acting; it’s incredible for such an overused story. The colour scheme and the wardrobe choices are also very beautiful. This movie is also currently in the cinema; it’s very kid friendly and definitely a good way to spend time with the family and the kiddies.

#3 Insurgent

I do so love this franchise. I wouldn’t say that this movie is better than the last but it is definitely good. This sequel shows the aftermath of the attacks and features Tris with symptoms of PTSD following the death of her parents and her role in freeing Four. It follows Tris’s struggle to evade capture and the possible message behind a mystical box. It’s definitely a must-see for the adrenaline junky that also needs their fix of drama. Lucky for us, this movie is also currently out and I would say it’s best viewed with other fans of the Divergent series. There are lots of ooohs and aaahs to be had by many.

#4 The Duff

The Duff, designated ugly fat friend, is undeniably a 7 on the cheesy scale with a very predicable story about a not-so-popular girl and a jock. I have to say that it does add its own twist to said arch: this time the popular girls are actually somewhat nice – if only that were true in real life! I won’t delve into the plot because the trailer tells you all you need to know. I would recommend seeing this one if you’re looking for a good, cosy movie to watch on your couch. I wouldn’t bother going to the cinema though.

#5 The Age of Adeline

I am looking forward to this one. There’s nothing better than Sci-Fi mixed with romance. Adeline is a young woman who has a car accident that somehow prevents her from aging. She then has to move around every so often to be able to fly under the radar. All this time, she is missing out on life…until she meets someone she wants to share her secret with. Pause for dramatic effect. Although this story line has been done time and time again, it’s usually the male character who has everlasting youth. So, I’m interested to see how the switch will play out.

#6 Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Another awesome franchise that we’re all obsessed with! Or at least I hope were all obsessed with it… I like to think we share something in common. I have to admit that I wasn’t too keen on Part 1. I felt it was missing something…namely Part 2. As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, this movie continues where part 1 left off: with Peta having been brainwashed and District 13 pretty much declaring war. I will be sorely disappointed if I don’t witness something epic. This movie comes highly recommended, and I’m bouncing off the walls waiting for it to come out. Hurry up already!

#7 The Avengers: Age of Ultron

The avengers! This is a highly anticipated film in the Marvel universe. You don’t have to be a self-declared geek like myself to enjoy this soon to be epic series. Think about it: Who wouldn’t want to see the old gang back together again and defeating, I hope, some new foe. The trailer doesn’t tell you much—a rarity in comparison to the history of trailers—but that just makes it all the more exciting! However, if you’re a fan of the comics, then you pretty much know what’s coming. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

#8 Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens

This is truly the year of the geek. Now, I’m not a Star Wars fan myself, but I can definitely understand the hype behind this film. The question that’s on everyone’s mind is if this film will enhance the 6-part storyline or if it will completely bomb… We all know the saying, “Don’t fix what’s not broken.” Although I’m not among the people practically frothing at the mouth for this movie to come out, I really can’t wait to see the reception.

#9 Spectre

Bond. James Bond. I have a soft spot for this series, especially since this Bond character is constantly developing and the story lines are related. They really make us wait for these movies to come out, so it had better be good. Who am I kidding? It’s James Bond! What could go wrong. This movie follows the events that occurred in Sky Fall and introduces viewers to the sinister criminal organisation called Spectre. Definitely a must-see… I’m sensing a trend here.

#10 Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation

Following the spy theme is Mission Impossible 5, I really thought that this franchise had ended, but I’m pleasantly surprised that I was wrong. Who doesn’t want to see Tom Cruise holding on for dear life as an aeroplane takes off? You have to admit that it is a unique situation. This movie follows the idea that there is a rouge version of MIF (Mission Impossible Force). So, you guessed it, the good guys have to fight the bad guys because the bad guys are bad. Naturally, there’s a barrage of witty one-liners, especially by Simon Pegg, and death defying stunts by Cruise. What’s not to love?

#11 Pitch Perfect 2

Let me just state how much I absolutely love Rebel Wilson. Not only is she a fellow Aussie, but she is also dead set hilarious. Pitch Perfect 2 is all about attempting to win the World Championships, which will ultimately allow them to be reinstated after an unfortunate mishap, which naturally involves “Fat Amy.” If you want a night of laughs, then this is definitely the movie to see!

#12 Spy

Another absolutely hilarious actress is Melissa McCarthy. She plays a desk jockey at the CIA dying to move through the ranks to become a spy. She finally gets her chance, and hilarity ensues. I also never thought I would see Jason Statham in this kind of movie, which to me means this movie just got a whole lot funnier.

#13 Hot Pursuit

There are definitely some great comedies coming out this year and Hot Pursuit is one of them. The combination of Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon is absolutely hilarious. Filled with side-splitting one-liners and all-round antics, this is 100% a need to see. The plot centres on Witherspoon, a police officer, protecting Vergara who is an eyewitness to the cartel’s crimes. Through a series of unfortunate events, they end up on the run instead and all manners of mischief ensue. You all know where I will be when this movie comes out!

#14 Mortdecai

Johnny Depp is by far the weirdest and funniest individual. You guessed it: This is a somewhat twisted comedy. Mortdecai is an art dealer with a quirky and somewhat rude personality who is asked by the government to find a stolen painting that will be used to fund a revolution against said government. Driven by his patriotic duties—*cough* sarcasm cough*— Mortdecai naturally accepts the position and, you guessed it, mayhem ensues. Watch him battle criminals and attempt to make a tidy profit on the side under the watchful eye of his wife. A must-see, especially for Johnny Depp fans.

#15 The Longest Ride

Nicholas Sparks is an amazing author, especially with works like the Notebook and A Walk to Remember under his belt. Now, he brings us The Longest Ride, which focuses on the love story between a woman and a bull-rider. At the same time, we’re told the love story of an elderly man rescued form a car accident by this couple. This is 2-for-1 kind of deal. This romance will definitely be a tearjerker with ups-and-downs. It would be a good movie to force your significant other to watch with you; nothing like a compulsory romance to bring two people closer together.

#16 Mad Max: Fury Road

Does anyone remember the classic films with Mel Gibson? Well this, my dear friends, is the first film in 30 years. 30 years! Although Mel Gibson has been replaced by Tom Hardy, even Charlize Theron is on board. This instalment naturally focuses on the idea that women in this time are brooding mares and completely helpless without the strong guidance of Max to get them through an immense desert (eye roll). Now, we see a switch-a-roo when Max is captured and it’s up to his female companions to rescue him. Bring on the strong, independent women!

#17 The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

You know those really weird Indie movies that always happen to feature some Johnny Depp inspired character? Well, this movie is nothing like that. It’s culturally robust, filled with hilarious instances and reminds us that despite what the media tells us, life doesn’t end after age 50. Here is a rom-com that will have you in side-splitting laughter and “oohing” and “aahing” in equal parts. If you’re a fan of Bollywood, musicals or random dance routines, you’ll have an even greater time. Or that’s what the trailer implies…

#18 Chappie

Hugh Jackman. Need I say more? Chappie is about a world that uses robots instead of police. Things change when Chappie is created and it’s discovered that he/she can think for itself. Hugh, our mullet-wearing foe, is not too happy about this and goes on a vendetta to kill poor Chappie. Naturally, Chappie’s friends teach her/him how to survive. But, will Chappie make it out alive or will the mullet win? This movie is similar to I, Robot, so if you liked that movie then you should go and see Chappie.

#19 Jupiter Ascending

Aliens! With a queen! Can anyone say “Gurl Power!” It’s revealed that Earth is actually part of a number of other planets that have been seeded so that at a certain time the populations can be harvested. Basically, genocide is committed so that the elite can get their hands on youth serum made from the deceased. Jupiter (Kunis) turns out to be the rightful heir to the throne, and will thus inherent Earth, which ultimately will end the harvest. However, the deceased Queen’s son isn’t about to relinquish his claim on Earth. Thus ensues the battle. I am a massive Sci-Fi fan so this is definitely on my bucket list.

So, there’s the list folks. Did you spot your favourite? Which movie are you keen to watch?
