DIY: Make Your Own Earrings

Getting a new pair of earrings is so satisfying, right? But, making them for yourself is even better. And the best thing is that you know that there is no chance in the universe of running into someone who has the same pair.

The other day I was sitting in a coffee shop when I saw a girl with the most interesting big hoop earrings. I have a few pairs of hoop earrings in a few different sizes, but that’s as far as their variety goes. But this girl had a pair that immediately made my brain working up a DIY version. I never got home so fast and that afternoon, as inspiration really struck, I upgraded some old hoop earrings, and then went on and made two brand new pairs.

1. Remake Your Old Hoop Earrings

Old Hoop Earrings

What you need:

  • a pair of hoop earrings
  • yarn in 2 or 3 colors (I chose 3 shades of purple)
  • hot glue gun
  • a toothpick

This is a really easy DIY, no special skills required, just a little imagination. All you have to do is decide on the color palette and know how to use a glue gun. I decided to make a kind of an ombre effect with purple and pink, but this idea is also very effective with neon colors, or even with the black and white combination.

What to do:

1. Decide on how you want to arrange the colors.

2. Glue the beginning of the yarn an inch away from the beginning of the earring, leaving a few millimeters of the yarn free.

3. Start wrapping the yarn around the earring, also covering the yarn that you left free.

4. When you finish wrapping the first color, glue the end of the yarn to the earring and leave a few millimeters out again.

5. Start wrapping the second color just like before, again covering the loose strand from the previous color.

6. Repeat these steps until you used all the colors you wanted.

7. In the end use a toothpick to tuck in and hide the leftover pieces of the yarn.

2. Buttons and Bows Earrings

What you need:

  • buttons
  • satin ribbon bows (you can either buy them or make them)
  • earring posts
  • earring backs
  • hot glue gun

After I finished the hoops, my creative juices were still running. I took out some earring posts and some old buttons and made two satin ribbon bows. After a few minutes I had two more, brand new pairs of earrings.

What to do:

1. For the first pair I just glued two little buttons, in the prettiest mint color, to the ear posts. You can use smaller or bigger buttons of different styles, colors, sizes and shapes, and it’s all up to your imagination, and needs.

2. For the second pair, I made two pink ribbon bows and glued them to the earring posts. I wanted to have a pair of pink earrings to wear with a white dress. I also plan on making a few more pairs in different colors and maybe decorate the bows with beads or small studs in the middle.

With these few easy steps you can make endless number of earrings in many different styles. You can make them for yourself, but you can also give them as a gift. You can invite a few friends over to show them how to make earrings and spend an afternoon together creating something.

It’s certain that once you start, you won’t be able to stop, so now you might want to consider additional storage options. Have fun creating!
