DIY: Simple Wall Art Ideas

Creating DIY wall art is a fun and rewarding experience with instant results. So, here are a few ideas to help inspire your future projects.

I am one of those people who constantly rearrange furniture in need of change. But recently I got an unused canvas from a friend who is an artist and decided that my walls are next in line for a makeover. So I did a bit of research and compiled a list of a few simple DIY wall art ideas to try out.

1. Framed

Framed Wall Art Ideas

A while ago I found a large framed poster for anti-aging cream, thrown out in front of a closed beauty salon. It instantly sparked the idea for an art project for the living room, so I took it home.

I carefully removed the poster from the frame and measured the piece of sturdy white cardboard to fit the frame. All the while, I had in mind the ocean waves, so I downloaded 4 pictures of waves, pasted them on the cardboard and put the cardboard back in the frame. And the waves kept me cool for the summer.

Now, this project can be done in many variations. It is easily adaptable to your needs in terms of budget and space. You can buy the frames for a few dollars, or you can use the ones you already have. They can be bigger or smaller, depending on the size of the wall.

You can download the pictures you want (this is where I found the picture of waves) and print them out, but I’m also planning to use some of my own photos of nature which you can do, too. You can use frames in any color, but I believe white, black or gold are a great choice for almost any space.

2. Quoted

Do you have a favorite quote, or favorite lyric, or a favorite line from a poem? You should make it a part of your daily life. Put it up on your wall, to make you smile every time you look at it.

All you need is an old painting (find at a flea market), white spray paint, and some letter stickers. Decide on the arrangement of letters, they can be in perfect line or uneven, and paste them on the painting. Then spray paint, allow the paint to dry, and in the end carefully peel off the stickers. This is a very affordable way to spice up your space and it’s also an original piece of art that you can also make for someone else as a gift. (more pictures at A Beautiful Mess)

Finally, this is probably the cheapest wall art idea, since for this project we will use potatoes. Yes, you’ve read well, potatoes! If you want something temporary and inexpensive for your walls, just take out a few potatoes, white cardboard, or canvas, and some paint.

Carve out little circle stamps on the potatoes, choose the colors, and stamp away. You can use the whole rainbow of colors, or you can use the combination of black and silver, or gold, or even red.

And if you have a steady hand you might try to cut out shapes other than circles, like stars or hearts. It’s all up to your imagination. You can also easily involve children in this project, but you’ll definitely feel like a child by doing it. (for more detailed instructions go here)

DIY wall art is the easiest way to freshen up your living space, whether you are living in a rented apartment with strict housing rules, or your budget doesn’t allow bigger renovations. And what’s most satisfying is that you have an original piece of art that you’ve created for yourself.

Finally, if all this inspired you, and you need more ideas, find more inexpensive ways to decorate your space here.
