10 Things to Help You Sleep Like a Baby

Do you lie in bed for hours before you finally fall asleep? Are you having trouble sleeping through the night? There’s no need for those restless nights any longer. Here are 10 things to help you sleep like a baby.

We’ve all suffered from sleepless nights. In fact, I’ve been suffering from them for the past few weeks. Every night I wake up at least twice and change the thermostat or get some water. The next day, though, I’m completely exhausted.

A good night’s sleep is imperative to your health, both mental and physical. In order to have the energy you need, and the mental calm, you have to get a good night’s sleep. There is no magic cure for everyone, but, before you resort to sex or alcohol, here are ten things to help you sleep like a baby that you can try tonight.

#1 Warm Milk

warm milk

Although it doesn’t sound very appetizing, drinking a glass of warm milk before bed is really a quick and easy way to get some sleep. Warm milk does two things, first, the milk has tryptophan in it which is a natural sleep aid, and second, the warmth, combined with the thickness of the milk, coats your stomach so you feel full. It’s probably the oldest sleep trick in the book.

#2 Turkey Sandwich

Speaking of tryptophan, if you’re not much of a milk drinker (or lactose intolerant) try eating a turkey sandwich before you go to bed. Turkey also has tryptophan (which is why we always feel exhausted after eating Thanksgiving dinner), and the sandwich will calm and relax you before bed.

#3 Daily Walk

One of the reasons I find myself restless at night is because I really don’t get out enough during the day. Sure, I work, but that’s not a relaxing way to release your excess energy.

Going for a daily walk, or doing something you enjoy at least twice a week, will not only help burn off energy so you rest better, it will also keep your mental health strong. You have to get out and enjoy life. If you’re not much on walking, then take up meditation or yoga. If those don’t appeal to you, join a softball team or take swimming lessons.

#4 Comfortable Pillows

I can’t tell you how important it is to have comfortable pillows on your bed. I added two new pillows to my bed recently and now when I sleep, I fall asleep faster and then sleep much heavier than I did before. Your bed should be comfortable. After all, you can’t relax if you’re not comfortable.

#5 To Do List

One of the reasons I continuously wake up at night is because my brain is still going on about all of my stresses. How will I pay the bills this month, did I wash jeans for tomorrow, what am I going to do with the rest of my life?

Sometimes, it isn’t even big issues that keep me awake, sometimes it’s just the pile-up of all the little things. Because of that, I’ve started making a nightly to-do list. Before I go to bed, I list all of the things that I have to get done tomorrow (or the rest of the week). That way, I already have it planned and don’t have to stay up all night wondering if I’ll ever get it done.

#6 Fan

One of the main reasons many people can’t sleep at night is because it’s too quiet. If your’e someone who’s used to noise, then purchasing a fan for your room can definitely help you sleep like a baby. White noise, or soft background noise, often adds a sense of comfort and helps you fall asleep. Although I’m usually one of those people that prefer silence, I do find that I sleep better sometimes with a TV on.

#7 Night Light/Pitch Black

There are two types of people in the world: Those that need a night light, and those that need complete darkness to sleep. I vary. If I’ve read or watched something scary, or if my mind won’t let me relax, then I need a night light, however, if I’m feeling okay,, but exhausted, then I want pitch black.

Play around with the lighting in your room. The right light will help you sleep like a baby.

#8 Close the Drawers and Doors

I know it might seem like a silly notion, but sometimes the little things tend to drive us crazy. Is your bedroom cluttered? Are your closets and drawers overflowing with clothes to the point you can’t close them?

If so, then you need to organize your bedroom and close the drawers and doors. One of the things about a bedroom is that it’s your sanctuary. This is the one place you can go to relax, be yourself, and be comfortable. In order to be comfortable, however, it has to be tidy and organized. Trust me, once you get those drawers closed, you’ll sleep soundly.

#9 Soft Music

White noise isn’t for everyone, however, sometimes we need a little mental distraction to get some peace within ourselves. One thing you can try is turning on the radio to classical music. Classical music reminds us of lullabies we heard as a child, and sometimes it’s easier for us to fall asleep like that as an adult as well.

If music is too much, try sounds of nature. I know many people who listen to whale songs or falling rain. For me, falling rain just makes me get up to pee in the middle of the night, but, sometimes the sound of a heavy thunderstorm makes me sleep like a baby. Try a few different things for yourself.

#10 Something to Cuddle

I’ll admit it, I don’t like to sleep alone. It took me a very long time after my ex to be able to fall asleep again. Even now I have problems sleeping without feeling like something is holding me. What I’ve learnt to do is to place two pillows together in an upside down V shape. I lie inside the V with one pillow pressed against my back as I cuddle the other pillow. If you’re a cuddler, this trick works wonders to help you sleep like a baby.

So tell me, what tricks do you use to sleep through the night?
