5 Rules to Look After Your Teeth

It is important to have healthy teeth and a nice, white smile. Of course, you can’t really expect the Hollywood smile unless you are either very lucky or have porcelain veneers. Still, you can look after your own teeth and keep them in the best shape. Here are 5 rules on how to do that.

1. Visit Your Dentist on Regular Basis

Most people visit their dentists only when they have a problem. If you want nice and healthy teeth – don’t be one of those people.

You need to visit your dentist at least once in every six months, no excuses. Even though you might think you don’t have any problems with your teeth, you could be wrong. Your teeth can sometimes start to decay from the inside, and by the time problem gets out on the surface, it could be too late. It’s also great if you can afford teeth polishing every six months. That way your teeth will stay healthy and shiny white.

2. Floss After Brushing

Flossing is a relatively modern practice but it’s not to be taken lightly. Flossing is actually crucial for healthy teeth, and it is just as important as brushing.

A lot of people think that flossing is not really that important, but think about it this way; every time you eat, there are small particles of food that get stuck between your teeth. If your teeth are not set really wide apart, you won’t be able to get those particles out with a brush but you will with floss.

Be careful if your teeth are set very close together. You may need some extra strength to actually insert the floss between two teeth and you may end up hitting your gums with the floss and making them bleed.

3. Watch What You Eat

Your teeth are dealing with food you eat every day. Do everything you can to make their job easier and to protect them.

Now, this doesn’t mean that you should only have soups and shakes because you’re afraid you could damage your teeth. On the contrary, if you only give them soft food they will start to deteriorate because they’ve got nothing to chew on. On the other hand, don’t act like you’ve got titanium teeth that can chew on just about anything.

Different foods have different impact on your teeth. Strong spices and acids damage your tooth enamel, while milk and milk products regenerate it. As we all know, sugar destroys your teeth. Vegetables contain a lot of important ingredients that make your teeth stronger, but so does meat. In the end, you’re an omnivore and your teeth like variety, so don’t exclude any type of food completely from your diet and you will have healthy teeth.

4. Forget About Cigarettes

And I mean completely forget about them! Don’t cut down; don’t switch to light brands, quit completely, today!

Cigarettes are not only bad for your teeth; they are bad for your whole body and overall health. They cause your teeth to become yellow, deteriorate and fall out, and I’m not even going to begin ton talk about the extremely bad breath. They also make your gums become black and weak, which is another reason your teeth might fall out.

Almost everything about the bad influence of cigarettes has been said. Warnings are written on every pack of cigarettes. If you love your teeth, your body and your health, quit smoking right away.

5. Cut Down on Coffee, Alcohol and Sodas

Coffee and alcohol cause stains on your teeth that are very hard to get rid of; if you can’t completely give up coffee, at least try to reduce it to one cup a day. When it comes to alcohol, we all know that too much is really bad for us, but we also heard that one glass of red wine a day prevents heart disease. It doesn’t matter if you believe this to be true or not, keep in mind that it is the red wine in particular that stains your teeth most.

Sodas are perhaps the worst thing for your teeth out of this group. Not only that the carbon dioxide damages your teeth, sodas are also packed with sugar that will destroy your teeth. It’s best to completely forget about sodas, they are bad for your teeth and your waist line as well.

Remember that you need your teeth to last your entire life and looking after them properly will surely keep them in a good condition for as long as you are around. Of course, veneers are a solution but that is one really expensive solution that can never replace your natural teeth. Follow these rules and also read about how to protect your teeth, and you are sure to have a beautiful shiny smile.
