Valerian Root Side Effects

Valerian root has been used for centuries for its beneficial sedative properties, as well as to treat many other health disorders. However, just like any other natural remedy or chemical medicine, it has a few adverse effects and may require caution and careful use in specific situations. Let’s take a look at the most important valerian root side effects.

High Dosage and Extended Use of Valerian Root

As far as high and excessive dosages are concerned, valerian root is no different from any other natural or chemical remedy, meaning that, if used in large amounts, it may produce unwanted effects.

When you buy valerian root of any form, you should always read and carefully follow the instructions written on the box. It is advisable that you consult a physician regarding exact and proper dosage that should be based on your physical or medical condition.

Even though it is a completely natural remedy, some high dosage valerian root side effects may always occur. Large amounts of valerian may cause nausea, headache, grogginess, dizziness, blurred vision or heart palpitations. Extremely high dosages may even lead to liver intoxication or malfunctions of the nervous system.

It is recommended to stop using if the above mentioned symptoms appear, as well to consult your doctor for further dosage, and use. However, these side effects generally occur, only if valerian root is taken in excessive amounts or if a person is allergic to it.

Extended use of valerian root may also cause a few undesirable effects, such as stomachache or depression, apathy and a feeling of mental dullness.
