How to Make a Complete Career Change

I’ve just made a huge turnaround in my career and I have to tell you that benefits are simply thrilling. I had no satisfaction from my work whatsoever and I was starting to hate myself whenever I get up early to get to work in time. While at work, I used to feel uncomfortable to even go grab a coffee because I didn’t feel like community supports me. And the fingers were always pointed at me. I didn’t feel pleasant to be there at all.

If you feel like your career is standing still, then it’s time to move on. It won’t be easy, but I can promise you it will be worth it. You spend too much time on your work every day and not to be satisfied with it is simply useless both for you and the company. Not to mention that life is way too short to be constantly unhappy at your workplace.

There is no right timing for career change.

You cannot be too early or too late. Whenever you feel you need the change that is the perfect time to do it.

  1. Maybe you feel like you have been just a participant in someone else’s business success story and now you want to become the one in charge. That is great decision but you need to prepare yourself for it. Talk to your family and friends and ask for their opinion. See if you really have all it takes to be a CEO and if you think you do, now is the time to react.
  2. Be realistic. Let’s say you worked as sale’s person for 10 years and you want to become a ballerina. Well, that doesn’t seem too plausible does it? See if you have all the criteria needed in order to be successful in your new career.
  3. Be flexible and realize that your new job might have better salary but bad location, or better work community but lower salary. These tradeoffs are normal in every person’s life and they depend solely on your priorities. You need to think about this long before you decide to change your career because once you quit your job, it’s hard to go back.
  4. Do some networking and see how other people with similar backgrounds are finding their work places. Maybe there are some offers that you didn’t even see coming. And maybe some of your friends have suggestions you haven’t even thought of.

I would suggest you to examine yourself very well before making this decision. It is not a joke and the more seriously you take it, the better decision you will make.

In any case, your friends, family and people that generally know you best should be the first to turn to when asking their insights on your careers change plans. Even if they are supportive or if they disagree, you will learn many new interesting things about yourself and your business through their comments.
