Learn How to Remember Names in 4 Easy Steps

A lot of people have a problem remembering other people’s names. This is not really a flattering characteristic in the corporate world. If you don’t remember people’s names, they will think that you don’t care enough and will possibly label you as an amateur. Don’t let this happen – learn how to remember names in 4 easy steps.

1. Repeat

You know how they say that repetition is the mother of learning? Remember this next time you meet someone new and want to remember their name.

We usually forget other people’s names because we don’t even register them. This is especially the case when you are meeting a couple of people at once. Establish the following routine: As soon as someone says their name repeat it and I don’t mean silently, repeat the name out loud before you say your own name.

You may think that you will look silly doing this but you won’t really. A lot of people do this, so you will be just one of many.

2. Associate

The easiest way to remember someone’s name is to associate it with something you already know; it can be someone with a same name, a rhyme, basically anything that will remind you of that person’s name.

Whatever you choose, make it easy to remember. You’re not really going to remember someone’s name if you associate it with a person that looks similar but has a completely different name. The association can be anything that come to mind, just make sure that you don’t say them out loud because you might offend someone.

3. Get a Reminder

Even if you do repeat someone’s name as soon as you meet them and instantly associate the name with something you will remember, sometimes you just find yourself forgetting that name again. Don’t worry, you can still do something about it.

The key is to hear that person repeat their name again, perhaps when they introduce themselves to someone else who comes along. Introductions are always a good opportunity to refresh your memory.

An even better idea is to get some kind of reminder of that person. The best way is to ask for a business card their name will certainly be on it. Furthermore, you can ask for that person’s email. Business people usually have their own names as an e-mail address, so you will have their name in writing.

4. Ask Again

If nothing else works, you can ask the person to repeat their name. Even though this could be a little awkward, if there’s no other way, you’ll have to do it.

Make sure you apologize and say something like: “I am so sorry but I’ve met so many people today, can I please have your name again?” and this time make sure you remember it because asking twice borders with being rude and arrogant.

Keep in mind that connections are your strongest link to the corporate world. You won’t really make any if you keep forgetting people’s names. Follow these 4 steps and learn how to remember names easily.
