Self-Dating: 7 Unique Ideas On A Budget

Taking yourself on dates is a wonderful way to get to know yourself better, as well as maintain a sense of independence if you are in a relationship.

Scores of articles and literature indicate that maintaining your own individuality and independence is essential, not only for self-love, but in order to have healthy relationships with others.

One of the ways you can do this is by having ‘self-dates.’ I love these times. I get to recharge, refocus and do something for myself for a change. It also helps me to decompress and resolve any fatigue I may have.

With that being said, we all have times where our finances are a bit lacking, and, let’s face it, entertainment and leisure costs are expensive, whether you are going to a movie, out for dinner or hitting up a spa.

So, what happens if you crave some alone time, but have limited funds? Here are some of my top ideas for awesome self-dates!

1. Take in a wine and paint night

This can be a really fun activity for a girls’ night out, but also for a self-date. You get to paint, which is extremely therapeutic and relaxing, and consume wine at the same time. Often, these nights are relatively inexpensive, making them a great idea on a budget!

Typically, you do not need to have any experience or be at a certain skill level, though it does depend on the instructor. Make sure to check this out ahead of time to avoid any surprises or stress.

2. Have a spa night—in your own home

I love getting a pedicure as much as the next person, but when they cost around $70 on average…no thank you.

You can create a spa in your own home. Run a bubble bath. Light some candles, and have some relaxing music playing. Spotify works great for this! Sip on a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage of choice. Read a book or magazine if you want.

Purchase a face mask, or you can make your own. This article has some great ideas for making your own face mask, based on your skin type. Treat yourself to a manicure/pedicure. Purchase a pair of spa socks and give yourself a foot massage with some beautifully scented lotion.

The possibilities are endless!

3. Hit up a local coffee shop and write

I enjoy going out for coffee, bringing my journal and writing while sipping on a London Fog. This is a great way to enjoy some alone time and relax.

It is also an excellent way to decompress, and perhaps even work through issues or difficulties you may be facing. It is amazing the things writing will uncover!

The purpose you are writing for is not important, whether for mindfulness, journaling or creating a story. The intention is to reflect within yourself or use your abstract side and enjoy delicious desserts and a hot drink. Grab your laptop or writing implements and a yummy beverage, then unleash your inner creativity!

4. Relax with a yoga night

If you can’t afford to check out a class at a local yoga studio, grab a mat and check out yoga videos online. Yoga is a great way to strengthen and stretch out your muscles, as well as relax. Follow along with the instructors, and you are sure to feel calmer afterwards, as well have an excellent workout!

There are many yoga channels with excellent videos on YouTube if you conduct a search. Here is one example among the many. This is also a great site to access. There are hundreds of free yoga class videos you can stream, and they accommodate a variety of levels and styles.

5. Have a movie night…on your own

That’s right: on your own. This means that you can watch anything YOU want. Do you want to check out Fifty Shades of Grey? Then do it. The Witch? Go right ahead!

It’s all about you and what you are up for. Get your popcorn ready, and snuggle up with a cozy blanket and indulge. Also, make sure to wear your most decadent pajamas. You want to be as comfortable as possible and feel completely relaxed!

6. Check out a drop-in class you’ve always wanted to try!

Drop-in classes are a great, inexpensive way to check out activities you may be interested in, but are unsure of committing to. You have so many options of things to check out.

Do you feel like salsa dancing may be your thing? Then hit up a class. Do you have an urge to try pottery? Seek out a business offering drop-in sessions. Your options are endless!

7. Attend a local event solo

Most cities offer a myriad of events throughout the week, both free and at a small cost. Check out your local newspaper or online publication and see what is going on your area. I am certain there will be something to satisfy your interests!

In the past, I have attended things such as poetry readings or live music on my own. I find this to be both relaxing and enjoyable.

You may have your own ideas of fun self-date ideas I have not included here. What other budget-friendly activities would you suggest to YouQueen readers? What kinds of activities do you enjoy the most on a self-date night?
