Dos and Don’ts: Summer Manicure

Pastel, neon and glitter nail polish is all you need to make you the brightest star of the summer.

It is natural that in these high temperatures you want to strip your outfits and your beauty and make up regimes to a minimum. But as any stylish and creative girl you need an outlet for your imagination and a stamp to make your personal style unique.

An easy way to avoid the fuss of putting the make up on, and layering the outfits, is to grab a bottle of nail polish, but you still have to make a smart choice. These are a few suggestions to keep in mind if you find yourself standing clueless in front of an endless shelf of crazy nail polish colors.

DOS

1. Pastels

Peach, lavender, mint green, or baby blue, rule the summer. Just think of ice-cream and choose a color. This is an easy and sophisticated look that goes well with most summer outfits.

Pastels with a twist

If you are feeling adventurous you can try painting each nail a different pastel color. Optionally, you can do a gradient look, popularly called ombre. This means painting your nails in five shades of a color, for example, blue, pink, or orange.

2. Neon

This is the trend that started last summer, but is still going pretty strong. Pick your favorite neon color and you will instantly get a summer manicure with an impact. For the best effect you could combine it with a simple white outfit, to avoid overdramatic look.

Neon with a twist

Just for fun, you could try and make stained glass effect with you neons. Start with a coat of white nail polish, as it makes neon colors stand out. With a thin brush and black nail polish create a stained glass pattern, then fill in the gaps using a different neon color for each piece.

3. Glitter

Don’t think glitter is reserved just for winter holidays. Use a gold or silver glitter nail polish over a pastel and you will take a simplest outfit to the next level, easy as that. You can even cheat and paint your nails with glitter polish without any color underneath. When I do this I instantly start smiling every time I look at my nails, plus the wear and tear is much less noticeable, so your manicure will last longer.

Glitter with a twist

If you feel that glitter is too much for you, you can try adding it to your color of choice on just one nail, usually on the ring finger, but you can also do it on your thumb or a pinky. You get less shine, but still an interesting and unique manicure.

DON’TS

1. Black. I tend to avoid black and other dark colors during summer. You will have enough of dark in fall and winter. And isn’t it always better to have nails that remind you of ice-cream or beautiful exotic birds in summer?

2. Long and pointy. I also tend to avoid nails that can be used as weapons. It looks scary and unnatural, plus you can hurt yourself. If you really like your nails long wouldn’t it be more sophisticated and subtly sexy to file them into an oval shape and paint them a pastel color?

3. French manicure with embellishments. Unless you are a bride, I would avoid this look for every day. It might seem too pretentious to wear little diamonds you’d wear to your wedding on your morning run, grocery shopping, to the beach, to a pool party, or doing your laundry. If you really like your French manicure, I believe you can get a more natural look with shorter nails and without the embellishments.

But in the end, it’s all about having fun. Grab a bottle of nail polish, or grab a few, unleash your inner artist and let your imagination find your fun summer manicure, whether it is pastel, neon or glitter.
