Hair Trend: Buns

This season, everything seems to be about the buns. Here are our 10 hair bun ideas for this fall!

What is so fantastic about this year’s bun trend? Why, the simplicity of course. Even the most complicated buns only require a teasing comb, spray and pins. It really doesn’t get much easier than that.

From carefree, hot weather, comfortable buns to fantastic, sculpted creations, you really can’t go wrong with any style of bun.

The Top of the Head

Trend #1: Messy, on top of the world bun

It isn’t just an Asian trend, buns directly on-top of the head are ethically unbiased. The large, smooth bun on top makes the torso appear longer and leaner, and lengthens the neck.

This look is fantastic for showing off the chest or the shoulders, as the top-of-the-crown bun gives you the appearance of being taller and leaner.

Trend #2: Twirled girl

Get smooth and flirty with this low-key, high-profile bun.

Pull all of the hair back, and up while using a smoothing brush. Start with a high-pony and wrap around to create a spiral. Secure with pins and- done! This bun looks amazing dressed up or casual.

Trend #3: Braided and curated

This was a popular look for Gwen Stafani back in the 1990’s- and guess what? The bun is back again. Start out with a slicked back, high pony-tail. Braid the pony tail and then wrap it in a circle.

Secure with pins and then freezing hairspray. For a different take on the braided bun, you can braid lots of little sections within the pony-tail and then twist them all around in different directions.

This will require a lot of bobby-pins and spray, but will look wonderful.

Trend #4: Bee-hive bun

Imagine Amy Winehouse with a smaller hive, and instead of long hair, a high-bun. Literally- all of the hair goes into one bun. Get this look by using volumizing shampoo and light conditioner.

Blow the hair back without any brushes. Using a teezing-comb, pump your hump and smooth the hair back without flattening.

While being careful, create a high-pony at the top of the head. Secure in the loosest way possible. Use lots of spray and wrap forward.

Stuck in the middle

Trend #5: Ballerina bun

Nothing screams poise, class and refinement like a traditional ballerina bun. This type of bun looks best on clean, healthy hair.

A bit of smoothing serum and freeze spray are essential in keeping this sexy, timeless look fresh all day and night. Gym? Check. Dinner date? Check- The ballerina bun has got you covered.

Trend #6: Sideways craze

Sick of blending buns? Say hello to the side-bun, the unique asymmetrical take on straight-forward buns. This style is created the same way as the ballerina bun, but on the side of the head instead of in the center.

As usual, start with a pony and wrap around. Secure with pins and freeze!

Trend #7: Mid-bed-head bun

Want a large, volumous bun? Start fresh and wash your hair. Use amplifying/volumizing shampoo and minimal conditioner. Blow-dry hair with a round brush for extra volume.

Once you are done, go about the bun in the same way you would with the other styles; pull back in loose pony, twist, fold and secure. You may even opt to curl your hair, which will add more wave and volume.

Trend #8: Princess bun

Get the look of all your favorite beauty queens and celebrities. The princess bun is a super flirty, feminine bun which rests at the bottom of the head. You may choose to part your hair and slick it back into the low pony or leave it a little puffy to add some volume.

Once the pony is pulled back, simply twist, fold and secure. For low-buns, make sure to add extra hairspray, as the bun may chafe against your upper-back.

Trend #9: Twisted sister

Once your hair is dry, separate the hair into two sections (as if you are going to do two, low ponies). Twist each section until it reaches the top of your neck. Secure both sections with pins and hair spray.

You may opt to leave both sections as-is (in which case the bun will look like a large “U”) or twist one section around another for one, large, sexy bun.

Trend #10: French-chic low bun

Get the sexy, foreign look by starting with fresh, clean hair. Make sure it is smooth and healthy.

Part hair to the side and create a low-pony at the bottom of your neck. Wrap around, twist and secure.

Awesome extras

Feel free to add glitter, perfume, fake flowers, dried flowers, barrettes and ribbons into your bun to create a little extra razzle-dazzle. You may even choose to add small braids in random sections so that your hair seems textured and unique.

From soft and timeless to bed-head and effortless, buns are a force to be reckoned with. Oh, and did I mention that they’re fabulous?
