Reasons Why It Is Not Easy To Have Long Hair

Having long hair can make you feel like you're in a L'Oreal commercial, but while it is worth it, there are definitely some downsides to flaunting the longer locks.

Nothing in this world is constant; while it sounds profound if you consider how even your personal style has changed throughout your lifetime, you will probably agree. We all do a spring cleaning of our wardrobe every so often and find clothes we either regret ever getting or have simply grown tired of. The same can be said about our hairstyles as we tend to try a variety of different colors and lengths, particularly throughout our younger years.

Longer hair is often seen as the ideal hairstyle as it denotes femininity and allows for a greater variety of daily styling options. (This can be especially useful if you are trying to hide a bad hair day). While there are some obvious benefits to having long hair, it also comes with its fair share of problems.

There is a lot of upkeep

Growing your hair out can often make you yearn for your short hair days where the only hair product you needed was a basic shampoo. Unfortunately, now you need to be more selective with your shampoo as the longer your hair gets the more prone to frizz and damage it can become. Of course, the shampoo isn’t the only product that you need to invest in as conditioner will become your best friend against knots and tangles.

It doesn’t end there. Hair masks, oils and serums might all be needed to keep your long locks in top condition, while mousse and hairspray will help to keep your style in place. Needless to say, you should also remember not to neglect a regular haircut, especially if you want to keep dry and split ends at bay.

Sleeping can be tricky

Sleep is amazing, and no one is here to argue otherwise. When you’re tucked up in bed and in the middle of a comfortable night’s sleep, the last thing you want is be woken by the painful pull of your hair.

Many women find sleeping with their hair down to the most comfortable option; however, if you have long hair, you run the risk of accidentally pulling some out in your sleep. If you prefer to sleep with your hair tied or clipped up, though, it can be similarly difficult to sleep in a comfortable way. We just can’t win, can we?

The weather is your enemy

Mother Nature is a harsh and fickle mistress. Whether it’s a hot and sunny day, a rainy day or a windy day, each one comes with its own set of challenges for the long-haired lady.

Hot and sunny days can often have you contemplating if you should shave your head just so you can cool down. If you are actually brave enough to go for the chop, then well done! However, if you are not willing to sacrifice your long locks, you might want to stock up on plenty of hair accessories.

Rainy days bring humidity and that means you will have to deal with the dreaded frizz. In this case, hair oils and hairspray can be your saving grace, but just be careful not to overdo it or your frizzy hair will be replaced with greasy hair.

Blustery days have to be the absolute worst of them all. I have lost track of how many times I have had my hair exactly the way I wanted it only to step outside and have the wind ruin all of my hopes and dreams. It will either blow into my eyes, my freshly applied lipstick and/or general mouth area, and then end up a knotted mess.

Accidents will happen

Speaking of knots, your hair can also become tangled up in objects. This list may include, but is not limited to, jewellery, scarves, coat buttons, bra straps, bag straps and, unfortunately, even the odd door. The most efficient way to avoid such accidents is to always check where your hair is positioned before you move, but that is probably not high on your list of daily thoughts in all honesty.

Shedding can be disgusting

Okay so everyone loses a certain amount of hair every day and that is perfectly normal. It is common knowledge that we shed more hair during the summer months than the rest of the year. This is particularly bad news for long-haired ladies as this shedding is far more noticeable on clothing or in the shower than it would be for those with short hair. (Cleaning the shower drain can be especially nasty work).

You can rest assured though that unless your hair is falling out in large clumps it is nothing to worry about it and will reduce once the summer months have passed. Until then, try not to get too annoyed when you have a bad shedding day, and keeping some trusty clips at hand is never a bad idea.

As someone who has had both short and long hair, I can see the pros and cons to both. Knowing what I know now, I would still choose to grow my hair out, but that is my personal preference as to what suits my hair type. Do any of you ladies agree with me? Or do you think that the pain outweighs the gain? Please feel free to comment below and share your thoughts.
