Autumn/Winter Make Up Trend: Big Brows and How to Maintain Them

The runway has shown us that it’s time to put the tweezers down and let our bold, beautiful brows shine through.

Seen on the runways of Chloe, Victoria Beckham, and Versace – just to name a few – big brows dominated the catwalk this autumn season. If you’re looking to achieve this runway-ready beauty trend but don’t know where to begin, then you’re in luck!

We’ve got the inside scoop on how to get wow-worthy brows and most importantly, how to maintain them.

Read on to catch our tips.

1. First things first, determine your proportions

It is often said that the eyebrows shape the face, and we couldn’t agree more! There’s nothing worse than sporting a pair of brows that are completely disproportionate to your face, which is why it’s important to take into account the natural shape of your brow.

“There’s a special way to determine the length of the brow and where the highest part of the arch should be,” says Amanda Shackleton, celebrity makeup artist whose client list ranges from Martha Stuart to Ricky Martin.

The beginning of the eyebrow should begin at the bridge of the nose, the arch should be 2/3 of the way toward the temple, and the end of the eyebrow should extend from the corner of the nose to the corner of the eye.

2. Leave your brows alone!

The best way to achieve bold, beautiful brows is to leave them alone, says Heather Nelson, certified esthetician and makeup artist in the Los Angeles area. “Give your brows a chance to grow. Keep symmetry and the shape of your face in mind when going in for a new brow look,” she says.

And if waiting for your brows to grow out can turn into a lengthy process, you can use a brow serum to speed it up.

2. Tint if necessary

If your brow color is naturally light, you can make them appear more defined by visiting an expert brow artist who can tint your brows.

Nicole Tott-Berger, makeup artist and co-owner of San Francisco’s Social Beauty Company Salon, advises bold brow achievers to have a brow artist use a vegetable-based or henna-based tint to give the brows a fuller look.

3. What to do if your eyebrows are sparse

If you’ve got sparse areas in your eyebrows (hey, you’re not alone!), all hope is not lost. “First, cover your lids and brow area with a light layer of foundation, then powder it well,” advises Shackleton. “This is an absolute must because if you draw directly onto unprepared skin, the natural oils of your skin will slide the pencil right off.”

Now you’re ready to use a very light pencil to gently fill in the sparse areas in.

4. Use a brow pencil to shape

“Press firmly when drawing on the brows to that the line is even and not patchy,” says Shackleton.

Our favorite eyebrow pencil? The Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. Available in a wide range of colors, from dark to light, this pencil helps redefine the brows with its retractable, fine tip that makes filling in the gaps a breeze.

5. Use a brow powder to set

If you’re new to bushing up your brows, a brow powder will be your best friend.

According to New York-based celebrity eyebrow stylist Joey Healy, you can gradually build up the color using a brow powder. “Use a stiff, angled brush for control and begin by using a small amount of product,” he says. “Never overdraw your shape; simply emphasize key points in the brow by making the most of what you have.”

6. Keep brows in place with a brow gel

The last thing you want your brows to look like is a hot mess, so keep them in place with a brow setting gel like the Maybelline Great Lash Clear Gel. This transparent brow gel will keep stray hairs at bay for a fresh, polished look.

7. Keep the rest of your face simple

Bold brows are meant to serve as the focal point of your face, so keep the rest of your look simple by pairing your newly shaped brows with a nude lip, warmed up cheeks, and a soft smoky eye.
