3 Pros and Cons When it Comes to Getting a Dog

A lot of people struggle with a decision of getting a dog or not. A dog can be your best friend and bring you a lot of joy, as well as it can be a real menace and tear your home apart. Before you decide to get a dog, study these pros and cons that will make your decision easier.

There are so many reasons why you should get a dog and here are the three most important ones:

1. You Will Get a Friend for Life

Getting a dog means getting unconditional love. The purpose of your dog’s existence is to make you happy and it will try to show you that as much as possible. No one can be happier to see you than your own dog can. Furthermore, you will never feel alone again, because there is a cuddly friend that will be by your side.

2. You Will Get a Guardian

This doesn’t only stand for big dogs. The small ones have been known to be as protective of their owners as the big ones. They might not be able to actually guard you, but they can sure alert you of any possible danger.

3. Health Benefits

It’s been proven that people who own dogs tend to suffer less from hypertension as well as from depression. Furthermore, you will need to walk your dog at least half an hour a day, which means half an hour of exercise for you. And when you count in the fetching and just playing with your dog, you’ll see that you’re getting more active.

On the other hand, there are a lot of reasons why you should not get a dog. If you’re having second thoughts, here are three most important reasons why you should reconsider:

1. A Dog Needs a Lot of Your Time

You can’t work 8 hours and still have a dog. I mean, you can, but that dog will be one sad pooch. Just think that he’s supposed to be alone all the time while you’re at work. That’s a lot of hours and the dog needs to get out at least once during those hours. It’s really not fair to get a dog if you will not have enough time to spend with it.

2. Dogs Cost a Lot of Money

When you count in the food, the toys and bills to the vet, you’ll see that your dog costs quite a lot. You need to count on additional expenses as if you have another member of the family. Be careful when picking a dog – bigger ones of course need more food, but they can also pack up your vet bills, because they tend to be prone to a lot of illnesses. Take your dog from a good breeder and find out all about the breed before you make your decision.

3. Dogs Make a Lot of Mess

Picture this – you’ve just bathed, dried and brushed you dog. Now, you’re going out for a walk. Your dog will find mud, leaves and any other type of dirt it can find and roll up in it. Dog’s actually don’t like being clean, because the smell of products messes up with their nose. Your dog will then come back to the house, carrying all the mud and dirt on its paws.

Dogs are a mess there from the start – you need to teach them to pee and poo outside, and that takes time. Expect a lot of “presents” while they are puppies. They will also chew on your furniture and tear up your shoes.

Regardless of what I just said, I will always vote YES on getting a dog. However, you need to think about all these things and so much more. You need to think not only about yourself and the fact that you want a dog, but also about the dog itself. If you don’t have enough time, money or love to give to a dog, don’t get one. On the other hand, if you do decide to get a dog, choose one from a shelter rather than from a breeder.
