5 Books Every Girl Should Read in Her Twenties

Here is a list of 5 books that you probably didn’t hear about in your literature classes, but you should definitely read sometimes in your twenties.

As a girl in your twenties, I know that you are probably very busy. You are either building a career or just graduating from school, you are searching for love or have already settled down, maybe even starting your own family. Your time is precious, but don’t forget those other important, little things in your life, like reading, for example.

So I would like to step in here, and give you the list of 5 books that you won’t find on the classic reading lists, but are a great read for every girl in her twenties, and here is why.

1. Bridget Jones by Helen Fielding

If you’ve seen the movie and liked it, know that it’s not enough. This book is compulsory reading for every woman. And you must never feel sorry for Bridget (ok, maybe a little), but you must admire her honesty and optimism, you must learn from her. It is not an easy task, choosing between two men, each perfect in his own way. Well, should she choose the right one or should she just choose already?

2. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith

Meet M’ma Ramotswe in the magnificent and hot Africa. Be enchanted by her analytical and discerning mind. See what it means to be the first female detective in a society run by men, see how to earn respect of those same men. Once the adventure starts you won’t be able to put this book down.

3. One for My Baby by Tony Parsons

Now, let’s change the point of view for a moment. This book is about how a man feels after losing the love of his life, how he suffers deeply and surrenders to despair without fight. Well, life won’t make everything better and make a cliché, but a few new people in this man’s life, just might.

4. The Help by Kathryn Stockett

A book that is going to make you laugh out loud, adore and admire its characters, maybe even applaud in certain moments. On the other hand, it might also make you cry and almost feel the described cruelty on your own skin. The plot is set in the 60s, in the time of civil rights movement, but besides the serious social teams, prejudice and cruelty, this book is, above all, about friendships.

5. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby

This is the book that every girl must read. Why? Well, if you ever wondered what’s going on in a guy’s head, this book has the answer for you. And, though it will be hard, try not to hate Rob and keep an open mind. At least you will be able to enjoy his perfect taste in music, and by the end of the story you might even like him.

So whether you choose to read about a neurotic, but lovable lady from London, or about strong and wise ladies from Africa or the American South in the 60s. Whether you choose to think about a man who lost love or the one who threw it away, I hope you will find some time in your busy twenties to read these 5 books and that these characters will make laugh and cry at the same time, make you angry and leave you in awe. Have fun!
