Top 15 iPhone Apps Every Woman Needs

Want to transform your iPhone into a kick-butt, multifunctional device that has your back in every situation? Um, who doesn’t right? Well, then you’ll want to download these apps.

I saw a quote the other day that sums up our relationship with our smart phones rather effectively. It went something like: When our best friend falls over and lands on the ground, we laugh. When our iPhone falls and lands on the ground, we panic.

After all, what could possibly be worse than losing or damaging your phone? Our phones hold all of our personal information, entertainment, social connections and even financial resources. To damage or lose your phone would be to lose all of that sacred material.

But the good news is that you haven’t lost or broken anything. Phew. Sorry about the doomsday joke. And the awesome news is that you can make your iPhone even better.

To find out how, check out our list of top 16 iPhone apps that every woman needs.

1. Inspire Me Quotes

Every now and then, we all need a little inspiration. Crappy jobs, bad boyfriends and down days can drain our inspiration meter. But don’t worry – there’s an app for that.

Inspire Me Quotes is ‘your virtual inspiration generator for a happier, healthier and more meaningful life.’ The app works to combine stunning design and typography to ‘uplift, energize, excite and motivate you’. Essentially, it’s an inspirational quotes app but with a handcrafted, classier and more beautiful edge.

You’ll have access to motivational quotes, inspirational quotes, funny quotes, love quotes and stop-screwing-around-and-make-something-of-yourself quotes. There is also functionality to share quotes via Facebook, email and text messaging as well as receive daily quote notifications.

You can download Inspire Me Quotes for free, browse through your free quotes pack and then and download extra ‘quote bundles’ for 99c. The current bundles available are Goals, Dreams and NY 2013.

What are you waiting for? Go get inspired!

2. Dumb Ways to Die

Okay, so even though we’re all adults there are times when all you really want to do is curl up with a good game. When this is the case, Dumb Ways to Die is your partner in crime.

Originally developed as a YouTube clip for Metro Trains Melbourne, the Dumb Ways to Die app was created by McCann Australia and Barrel of Donkeys to promote train safety. And while this might sound a little dull, the game is anything but. Think cute little bouncing characters being run over by trains, attacked by piranhas and slaughtered by crazy killers.

And it’s actually pretty hard. You’ll need quick reflexes, a good sense of humor and at least an hour to spare as you battle each level.

Warning: this game is highly addictive!

3. Period Tracker Lite

No top app list would be complete without at least one period-related app. This time we have chosen Period Tracker Lite, which helps you, er, track your periods.

And while some features might seem a little ‘duh’, like the one that tells you when your period has started (erm, possibly may have noticed that one by ourselves, guys), other features such as mood, symptom and intimacy notes are pretty darn useful. It also lets you know when you’re fertile and connects with a calendar so you can have a quick glimpse of when you’re due.

4. WhatsApp Messenger

If your phone bills are becoming a little overwhelming, then WhatsApp Messenger will help you take back control.

Download WhatsApp once and it will immediately have access to your address book. You’ll be able to see who is already on WhatsApp in the favorites list and then invites others to join you. Free calls (local and international), picture messaging, text messaging and group chat are just some of the features WhatsApp offers.

5. Google Maps

If you’ve downloaded the latest iOS you’ll notice that the map functionality has changed from Google to Apple. And while for some people this isn’t a big deal, for others this is a problem with a capital p.

Google Maps is said to be slightly more trustworthy than Apple Maps and while Apple has an awesome turn-by-turn navigation, Google is definitely ye olde reliable.

6. Instagram

Instagram App

Selfies, landscapes and portraits, oh my! What phone would be complete without an awesome photography app? And while there are stacks out there (no, really, there are so many photography apps to scroll through that my pointer finger gets sore), I still have a soft spot for Instagram. As do 100 million other people, apparently.

With the ability to share to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Tumblr as well as cool filters and borders, Instagram is pretty darn cool. And best of all, it’s free.

7. Candy Crush Saga

The first time I saw Candy Crush Saga on the App Store I thought ‘Meh, it looks like Tetris. Big deal.’ I gave a small shrug, lifted my nose in the air, and continued on my merry app-searching way.

And then, after a few weeks when Candy Crush Saga continued to dominate the top charts for games, I finally relented. Hesitantly, of course.

And now, my entire life has changed. Literally. Figuratively. Metaphorically. Everythingically. This article has taken me triple the amount of time to write because after every app I tell you about I reward myself by playing Candy Crush Saga. I’m currently stuck at level 23.

But anyway, it’s awesome. Truly. And totally not like Tetris. Exactly how awesome it is can’t be described, so you’ll just have to take my word for it and download it. Just don’t complain when you lose two weeks of your life to trying to blast the jelly. Don’t worry – you’ll know what that means soon.

8. Flashlight

I have a confession: I’m still scared of the dark. As in ridiculously, stupidly ‘what was that in the bushes’ ‘oh crap, someone is trying to kill me’ scared of the dark. But there is a tool that helps me keep my fear at bay.

It’s called Flashlight and it helps me distinguish the serial killers from the possums (which is a cute but noisy tree-climbing, nocturnal animal in Australia). It’s bright, lighty and flashy.

There’s not too much more I can say about it, but that it looks good and has an SOS emergency mode to send a distress signal. Which would have come in mighty useful when I killed the electricity to our house the other day. Anyway.

A good app to have on hand ‘just in case’.

9. Find my iPhone

It’s not our fault. There are just so many darn things to keep track of these days. From iPhones to iPads and iPods to our regular day-to-day items such as our wallets, keys and handbags – it’s only natural that every now and then we misplace one of them.

And for the times when you’ve lost one of your i-somethings, you can turn to the Find My iPhone app. This free app allows you to pinpoint the location of your missing device on a map and then lock it, erase its data, play a sound or display a message.

Perfect for the times when you think your device may have been stolen or you just can’t find where it is, Find My iPhone is the private detective of the app world.

10. Pinterest

Did you know that at least 36.4 percent of people now use their phones to search the web? It makes sense, because we are far more connected to our mobile devices than we are to our desktops. And while the work hour web surfing is more than expected these days, so too is out of office hours mobile browsing.

So for those times when you see something uber cute online and don’t want to lose it, the mobile Pinterest app comes in handy. From vacation plans to inspirational quotes, recipes and home décor, now nothing gets lost or forgotten.

11. Facebook and Twitter

Okay, so I combined these two apps because well, I’m lazy and because it’s kind of the same point. Yes, yes, I know they are completely different networking sites, but well, normally if you have one then you have the other. So why not download them both in one go?

The benefits of using an actual Facebook/Twitter app are that they are easier to navigate than the mobile sites and it’s more convenient to visit an app than a web page. I’m sure there are loads of other benefits, but for lazy girls like me, the simple tap and go functionality is awesome. Oh wait, maybe that’s Mastercard …

12. Evernote

You know that good idea you had the other day? The one that came to you on your commute to work? No? Ah, drat. That’s okay, I’m sure it’ll come back to you.

Not.

How many genius, Albert Einsteinesque ideas do you forget simply because you had nowhere to write them down? Not anymore! Evernote is a really cool, good-looking note taking app. It’s cross-functional across multiple devices and has the ability to capture images, to-do lists and record voice reminders. There are loads of other features, so make sure you check it out.

13. Cab4me

Working late and need to find a way home? Or maybe you’ve had a little bit too much to drink on a girl’s night out? Dum dum dum – cab4me to the rescue! This is app is meant to get you a taxi anywhere, anytime. And if it can’t find you a taxi, it’ll give you web search results to help out.

It also calculates the estimated fare and is available in several countries.

14. Dreamboard Mobile

More than just a basic dream journal, this app allows you to remember, record and analyze your dreams. It has really neat functionality that allows you to see a graphical representation of your dreams and identify the emotions you felt, the role you played and the predominant colors that were in your dream.

The only downside is that once you have entered in a dream, you can’t review it. But hopefully that will be in a future version.

15. Circleof6

And to end on a serious but very important note, let’s look at the circleof6 app. This app has been featured by Cosmopolitan magazine, the New York Daily Times, MTV and Marie Claire. It’s also won a White House and HHS ‘Apps Against Abuse’ Technology Challenge award and the Avon Foundation for Women/Institute of Medicine ‘Ending Violence @ Home’ award.

And best of all, it deserves it.

Essentially, the app allows you to connect with six of your most trusted friends. If you get in trouble or are in a tricky situation, in two taps you can send a message to your circle of six friends. The message gives them your location and tells them you’re in trouble.

The app has been designed to prevent violence in vulnerable populations. And it’s free.

Okay, so I’d love to stick around and find out what you think of our recommendations, but I have some apps to play with. And a Candy Crush Saga level to beat.

So leave a comment to let us know what you think or if there are any other apps you can’t live without.
