What to Do When Bored (Other Than Facebook and 9GAG)

What to do when bored? That is the million-dollar question. If you’re twiddling your thumbs, here’s a list of things you can do to wave your boredom goodbye.

You must have been searching online for the cure to your boredom if you landed here. Well, have no fear – you’ve come to the right place! For those dreadful days when boredom strikes and keeps you glued to your couch with nothing to do, we’re here for you.

Read on for five things to do when bored (we even added a bonus)!

1. Plan your next European vacation

Maybe it’s not Europe, but you get what we mean. We all know planning a vacation can be a teensy bit stressful, but if we do it during our downtime, it’s the perfect way to spend hours on end.

Start by narrowing your travel destinations to one (or two or three!) cities and selecting an ideal vacation time. Are you thinking spring break, summer vacay or winter getaway? Make your way to all your favorite travel sites and look up affordable flights and hotels, and keep a running document of all your finds so you can go back when you’re ready. Tip: Try Groupon or LivingSocial for some great deals.

Our favorite part of vacation planning? Adventures and sight-seeing. Look up the famous monuments, must-not-miss hub spots and the five-star spas (gotta treat yourself a little bit!).

2. Get up and at ‘em!

Regular exercise boosts energy and reduces fatigue. An hour-long visit to the gym or even a jog around your neighborhood will do the trick if you’re feeling bored. The adrenaline will get your heart pumping and fire you up for the rest of your day.

If gymming or jogging solo aren’t your thing, try a group fitness class like yoga or Zumba, or taking your exercise outdoors with hiking or rock-climbing. If you want some extra feel-good motivation, bring a friend along! Company makes everything less boring.

3. Netflix, Netflix, Netflix (or whichever online watching website you use)

Breaking Bad’s series finale just happened. Confession? I never watched the show. But now I’m intrigued, and maybe you are too. If you’re sitting at home bored and can’t find anything good to watch on TV, hit your other favorite screen and start up a new TV series.

What’s even better? Pick a show that’s about to start up again and play catch up. Here’s a list of some September premieres:

  • Supernatural
  • The Walking Dead
  • White Collar
  • Covert Affairs
  • The Carrie Diaries

4. Make it a spa day

Go on, pamper yourself. You know you want to, and we both know you deserve it. One of our favorite things to do when bored is to take care of No. 1: you! A couple of options: Go to your local salon for a day of pampering and get the works: haircut, mani and pedi.

Or – if you’re on a budget, a homemade spa day is just as great. And you don’t even have to get out of your sweats! Turn up the volume on your favorite playlist, pick out a cute nail polish color (we like plums and oranges for the fall) and use your go-to face scrub for a bit of refreshing.

5. Fall cleaning + a little retail therapy

Ever go through your closet and realize there are some items hanging there that you just never wear? It’s never the right time or occasion. When boredom strikes, bring your attention to your wardrobe, and get rid of those pesky items.

If you wouldn’t wear the piece now, separate it. Don’t give yourself more than 10 seconds to make a decision – and don’t justify that you may wear that crop top next time you go out with your girlfriends. We suggest donating any lightly used items to a local charity, like Goodwill or The Salvation Army.

Plus, when you get rid of some items, you make room for more. Take your bored-self out for some retail therapy!

BONUS: Take a nap… ZzZ

Don’t feel like doing any of the above? Here’s a simple solution to your boredom: take a nap! Believe it or not, napping gives you energy. Just ask the Spanish who close their shops for a midday siesta.

To make the most of your nap, we suggest finding a dark, quiet place (don’t just crash on your couch with the TV on!) and nap for about 30 minutes to reduce post-nap grogginess.

That 30-minute snooze will improve your mood and productivity – and take you right out of your bored slump!
