How to Be Eco Friendly at Home

We are all very aware of how important it is to protect the environment, preserve planet’s resources and conserve Earth's life support systems. Sometimes we are simply not informed enough on how to do it or where to get all the necessary information that will help us do it correctly. Read the tips below and learn how to be eco friendly at home and protect and love your planet in the best possible way.

Reduce Energy Consumption

There are numerous ways to reduce energy consumption at home and help decrease global carbon dioxide emissions, keeping our indoor and outdoor air clean. Conserving energy will not only reduce your monthly bills, but will also maintain your environment healthy and protected. Take a look at the following tips and learn how to consume less energy in your everyday life and become eco friendly at home.

  • Keep your lights off during the day or when you are not at home and remember your family members to turn them off whenever they leave a room.
  • Replace your standard light bulbs with the low wattage ones or with the compact fluorescent bulbs.
Compact fluorescent bulbs will use up to 75 % less energy then the incandescent ones and they will last almost ten times longer!
  • Green up your home by replacing conventional hot water heaters with solar hot water heaters or on-demand (tankless or instantaneous) systems.
  • Install solar panels, which provide clean, pure and green energy. Solar panels can generate free power and produce electricity from sun light and in that way heat our homes and domestic water, as well as illuminate our living spaces in the eco friendly way.
Another advantage of solar panels is that all the surplus energy that they generate can easily be transferred to a battery and stored for later use.
  • Use cold water whenever you can. Rinse your laundry with cool water and avoid using warm water during hot summer months.

Conserve as Much Water as You Can

Don’t waste clean water, for it is one of our planet’s most valuable resources. Even though we see plenty of water everywhere around us, we must be aware that our fresh water supplies are diminishing in a very fast way, due to many factors. Apply the following suggestions to your daily life and save the earth’s most precious liquid: water.

  • Every time you turn on a water faucet, use the lowest pressure possible and turn it off whenever you don’t need running water. Teach your children and your family members to do the same.
  • Avoid filling up your bathtub and take showers instead. Don’t make them last more than 5 minutes.
  • Switch to low flow toilet mechanisms or to dual flush toilets. They will clean your toilet in the same way as the old ones, but they will use less water, reducing your bills as well.
  • Replace traditional showerheads with low-flow products.
Low-flow shower heads reduce water consumption by delivering a powerful mist instead of a direct and strong stream. In this way gallons of water can be saved per day, as well as energy costs and utility bills.
  • Never throw away leftover or unused water that has remained after cooking or washing. Use it to irrigate your garden or clean the exterior of your house.
  • Capture rainwater and use it for cleaning purposes or to water your plants.

Use Eco Friendly Products

Eco Friendly Products

Earth is our only home and it is very unconscious and incorrect to pollute it with chemical wastes and toxic garbage. Chemicals can seriously damage our planet’s ecosystem, destroy the ozone layer, as well as kill animals and plants and contaminate the air we breathe. • Stop buying and using body products and household cleaners that display words danger, warning, caution or poison. They are full of toxic chemicals and dangerous and harmful for you and your environment.
  • Choose non toxic and green certified house cleaning products that contain natural biodegradable substances.
  • Use ecologically friendly and natural body lotions, soaps and shampoos. They do not contain substances that have been tested on animals and they will not pollute rivers, lakes and seas.
  • Become even more eco friendly at home and start making your own cleaning products, by using and combining natural ingredients, such as lemon, vinegar, baking soda, salt, castile soap, grain alcohol, plant oil and natural herbal disinfectants like eucalyptus, tea tree oil, sage, lavender, lemon and peppermint.
