6 Organization Ideas for Small Spaces

Living in a small place is sometimes really frustrating; you fell like you are cleaning and arranging things all the time but no matter how hard you try no visible results are seen; the place seems crowded. Since I live in a small apartment, I know how difficult it can be to organise it properly, but I’ve managed to find some solutions to keep it functional and tidy. Here are some organisation ideas for small spaces that will save you time (and nerves) in the future.

1. Create Extra Storage

Invest in cheap, plastic containers of different depth and sizes. This is actually the most important and the cheapest investment at the same time. You can fill them with the out-of season clothes and then keep them under the bed. When it comes to a living room, get a few wooden or printed boxes and use them to keep magazines, CD-s, notebooks, etc.

2. Reorganize Your Closet

When you are trying to organise a small place, ottomans, closets and cupboards are essential to keep a place de-cluttered.  Now is the right time to say farewell to the clothes you haven’t put on for years or the skinny jeans you wore when you were in high school.  You’ll need the space for the items you use now.

Place a few plastic hooks on the inner side of the closet door to hang the ties, scarves etc.  At the bottom of the closet you can place (again) thin plastic or wooden boxes filled with the things you don’t use that often.

I, for example, have a big three wings over the wall closet in the hallway, so I reorganised it by adding few shelves in one part of it and leavening one narrow wing shelve-less. In the upper part of the shelved closet I keep extra beddings, pillows, towels and sheets; jackets, coats and some in – season wardrobe hangs in the middle part of the closet and the bottom is used for keeping shoes.

The narrow wing is where I keep a vacuum cleaner, an ironing board and (yea, you’ve guessed) a container with light bulbs, home tools like screwdriver, electric cables etc.

3. Minimalist Furniture

To make your living room look bigger and wider don’t buy large, heavy pieces of furniture; if you have a family, get a corner sofa with storage (you’ll get more space instantly) that isn’t too wide. And, if you live alone or with a partner, you can put just one sofa and use the dining room chairs when you have guests.

To save the space in the dining room, consider investing in a build-in-seating; add two or tree chairs on the side and 8 people can be seated.

4. Book Cases and Shelves

Place high shelves on the wall, even if you would rather hang an art picture. Decorate the shelf with a framed photo or a few scented candles to create a warm atmosphere. When it comes to bookcases maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a few low ones that can be put underneath the window or along the sofa back. In the latter case you can even use them as a coffee table.

5. Nesting Tables

Nesting coffee tables are very convenient.  They can be pushed together or placed around the sofas or chairs when you have guests.  They don’t take up much space so check the offer online in IKEA stores here.

6. A Shoe Rack Over the Bathroom Door

This is a convenient way to keep a hair dryer, combs, tweezers, etc.  It will help you get more space in the cupboards for keeping the cleaning product, towels and personal hygiene items. If you usually keep bathrobes and towels hanged on the bathroom door, remove the hooks and put them on a free wall.

Space-saving storage is the most important when it comes to organising small spaces; once you’ve got this settled, you’ll be able to decorate it the way you want.
