30 Short Haircuts
for Women
Looking for a chic and sexy new do? Try a bold short cut! It’s definitely a serious leap but a short style can give you that fresh new look you have been craving. If you feel like short haircuts for women are masculine, think again.
Short styles aren’t just for grandmothers and manic pixie dream girls. Anyone can pull it off with the right cut. Seriously, even you can. It’s all about finding the right cut for you. The most important thing to think about is your face shape.
A cut that might look amazing on a heart shaped face can look like a disaster on a square face. Know your shape and get ready for the perfect short haircut.
Heart Shaped Face
Heart shaped faces are easy to spot because of their wide hairlines and delicate pointed chins. If you have one of these rare and adorable face shapes, you are in good company. Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston and Kourtney Kardashian all have perfectly heart shaped faces.
Some beauty pros say that you must have a widow’s peak to have a heart shaped face. Without a widow’s peak, a similar facial shape is called an inverted triangle. That might be good information for you at some point but, when it comes to hairstyles, forget about it. If you have wide cheeks and a narrow chin, you can consider yourself to have a heart shaped face.

5 Short Haircuts for Heart Shaped Faces
1. Long, Graduated Bob
A long, graduated bob is the perfect short haircut for women with heart shaped faces. Ali Larter’s wavy hair looks gorgeous with this cut and it’s perfect for her features. Her hair has volume throughout so it doesn’t add weight to any one particular idea.
The long layers in the front give the illusion of length so her face doesn’t look too wide around her cheeks or forehead. While she does have a central part, it isn’t too severe. She still has wispy layers of hair on either side of her forehead, which minimize her slightly top heavy facial shape.
2. Bob with Bangs
Katie Holmes’ bob was iconic. Chopping off her long, bland high school girl hair marked her move from a teen a star into a woman of high fashion. The best thing about her cut is that it’s heavy around her chin.
This is a great short haircut for women with heart shaped faces because it balances off the facial shape. Since heart shaped faces are known for their narrow, slightly pointed chins, a haircut that is heavy around the chin is perfect for creating balance. If you have straight or fine hair, it’s the perfect alternative to a long graduated bob.
3. Sleek Crop
Jessica Stroup‘s sleek crop is the perfect short haircut for women who want something chic and modern. The side swept bang narrows her forehead and creates balance for her face.
Jessica has amazing cheekbones and this ultra-short hairstyle definitely draws attention to them. Rather than trying to minimize the heart shape of her face, Jessica actually draws attention to it.
If you have wide cheeks and you’re self-conscious about them, you can get the same cut but ask your hairstylist to just make it a couple of inches longer so that the side swept bang goes over your cheeks.
4. Chin Length Bob with Side Swept Bangs
Reese Witherspoon is known for her heart shaped face and amazing hair. She looked better than ever with her chin length bob and side swept bangs. All in all, it’s probably the most flattering cut for a woman with a heart shaped face.
By keeping the weight of the hair around the chin, it duplicates Katie Holmes’ flattering bob. It’s just as flattering but you’ll have a much easier time styling a side swept bang. If you have a widow’s peak, you’ll find Reese’s cut much easier to style than Katie’s because you won’t be fighting against your hair’s natural growth.
5. Fringed Pixie
A fringed pixie is the perfect short haircut for women looking for an ultra-short style. Jennifer Lawrence is using the same bang trick that Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Stroup, and Katie Holmes have been using for years.
The heavy bangs across Jennifer’s forehead help to create a balance to her face by minimizing the width of her forehead. This look works great for ladies with a widow’s peak because the tousled look allows you to work with your hair’s natural movement. And, women with heart shaped faces can take advantage of their delicate chin with this look. Ladies with a broader jawline might feel a little masculine with this uber short cut but it’s perfect for heart shaped faces.
5 never get short haircuts
for heart shaped faces
1. Heavy Bangs
Kerry Washington’s bangs aren’t really that different from Katie Holmes’ but there’s a critical error here. She’s just got way too much fringe going on. Her bangs are cut too far up on her head, there is no texturing and they are too wide.
Remember, the key to a flattering haircut is creating balance. Because women with heart shaped faces have narrow chins, an overly heavy bang can quickly overwhelm them. For better or worse, this look like faux fringe. Kerry’s part is so unnatural that it makes it look like all of her hair is coming from one single little spot on her head.
2. Wispy Bangs
Feeling like you can’t win when it comes to getting the proper amount of fringe? There is some truth to that. When it comes to short haircuts for women with heart shaped faces, you need to find something that is just right. While Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington have longer hair in these pics, the point remains.
Whether your hair is in a pixie cut or down to the middle of your back, you need to pay careful attention to your bangs if you have a heart shaped face. Because your forehead is significantly wider than your chin, it’s really important to create balance. Bangs that are too wispy are just going to serve to make your forehead look wider.
3. All One Length Bob
More on the fringe issue. A wide forehead like Christina Ricci’s will look much better with bangs. Having hair that is all one length is simply going to make your forehead look out of balance with the rest of your face.
Need proof? Look at some more recent pics of Christina Ricci. If she hadn’t had this dreadful chopped bob for so long, we would have probably never known that she has a wide forehead. Go for a long side swept bang if you don’t like having fringe over your forehead or copy Katie Holmes’ perfect bangs to create a perfect fringed look.
4. Top Heavy
Okay, you could probably live your entire life without being tempted to recreate Tyra Banks’s piece of modern hair art, but this example is important! The perfect short cut for women with heart shaped faces should definitely be bottom heavy.
Avoid adding too much height to the top of your head regardless of the style. Don’t go for a spiky pixie cut. If you go for a longer look, don’t stack your hair on top of your head. Avoid heavy bangs or anything else that might draw attention on top. Aim to keep the bulkiness of your hair around your chin.
5. Feathered Short Do
Jennifer Love Hewitt made a mistake just like Tyra Banks. Rather than bringing the attention to the top of her head, she has it sticking out all over the sides. Honestly, this is just a pretty awful haircut all around, but it’s an especially bad short hairstyle for women with heart shaped faces.
Remember, you want to keep the heaviest part of your hair around chin length. By creating the issuing of width between her ears and forehead, Jennifer’s cut is making her chin look pointy and miniscule. If you are really craving a feathered look, do it on hair that is shoulder length or longer.
Long Shaped Face
Do you think you have a long face? There are a few subtle differences between an oval face and a long face. A long face is characterized by broad cheekbones, a strong jaw, an elongated forehead and a narrow width.
Take a closer look at celebs like Gisele Bundchen, Alexa Chung, Liv Tyler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ashlee Simpson. All of them have long faces. While oval faces are rounder, long faces need a little more help in that department. Long faced ladies should be focused on adding body and volume to their hair while avoiding looks that elongate.
Celebrities With Long Shaped Face
5 Short Haircuts for Long Shaped Faces
1. Short Layered Curls
Sarah Jessica Parker is one of the celebs best known for her long face. While she typically sports long hair, she chopped off her trademark strands for an amazing short ‘do a few years back.
The great thing about this look is that it added volume all over the place. This is exactly what I mean by a perfect short haircut for women with long faces. This look broke up the weight of her curls while adding body all around and drawing attention away from her long chin. Long faced women should most definitely embrace their curls rather than reaching for a straight iron.
2. Layered Shag
If you have a long face, you will definitely want to pay attention to Milla Jovovich. She has been a hair chameleon for years and has tried just about every hair style out there. Take a look through some of her old photos to get some style inspiration. Decide which look works for you and which doesn’t.
This layered shag cut looks amazing on Milla for a few different reasons. First off, this style creates volume galore. The side swept bangs add volume around her forehead while the flipped out layers at the bottom make her chin look wider.
3. Sleek Bob
Ashlee Simpson looks better than ever with her sleek bob. It is a stunning short haircut for women with any facial shape and it is a particularly great style for long faces. The long, sleek side swept bangs create volume around her forehead and cheeks. All around, it is a truly amazing style. It’s fashionable yet incredibly easy to maintain.
It’s particularly great for women with fine hair. It will add all day volume and require little more than a round brush. It might be a tricky style for curly hair but it’ll be ideal for almost anyone else.
4. Blunt Cut Bob
Peaches Geldof’s blunt cut bob is a great alternative to Ashlee Simpson’s sleek bob. This style is great for anyone with wavy or straight hair because it will add instant volume around your head, especially if you add layers underneath.
While it’s great for most women, ladies with very curly or thick hair should stick with Sarah Jessica Parker’s short layered curls to prevent themselves from getting the dreaded hard pyramid of curls. One serious bonus of having a long face is that you can pull off a center part too so rock it with confidence.
5. Razor Cut Bob
Razor cuts are a great way to add texture and volume to your hair. If you are bored with the normal blunt bob style, go for a razor cut bob. This cut is best for medium hair that is straight or wavy.
If you have curls or ultra-fine hair, you will definitely want to avoid this look. It can cause your hair to look damaged and broken. The slight amount of fringe that has been added on and pushed off to the side creates volume around the forehead while razored off ends create volume and texture.
5 never get short haircuts
for long shaped faces
1. Undercut Pageboy
While the layered shag was stunning on Milla Jovovich, her undercut pageboy style leaves a lot to be desired. This is a horrible short haircut for women with long faces for a number of reasons. By doing such a short undercut on the one side, all of the volume has been taken away.
This makes Milla’s head look much narrower than it actually is. She does add some amount of volume at the side but it’s far too short. Having her hair cut at mid cheek level just extends her already long face. While Milla would look amazing with a shaved head, most women simply can’t pull this off.
2. Side Swept Bob
Jessica Alba’s hair has a wide range of problems too. First off, it has virtually no volume at all. It sits flatly on either side of her head and only serves to elongate her face. If she added a few more layers, it would look more like Ashlee Simpson’s sleek bob.
Instead, it just looks drab. Even worse, Jessica’s normally lush chocolate brown locks have been dyed within an inch of their life. For whatever reason, her stylist colored her hair to match her skin tone which is always a massive mistake. Altogether, this results in incredibly drab hair that just lies there unnoticed.
3. Pageboy
Nothing about this look suits the normally stunning Liv Tyler. It looks like she let her kids cut her fringe while the sideburn situation is utterly baffling. She has a few different layers in her haircut but they are all cut far too bluntly.
Even worse, her cut falls at exactly the center of her cheeks. This causes her face to look even longer than it is. All of this combines to create a truly terrible short hairstyle for women with a long face. On top of it all, her hair has far too much gel for such a short style.
4. Undercut Bob
I’m not even sure what to call this style. First things first, this look should be never worn by anyone over 21. Sorry to say, but it comes across as juvenile and just plain messy. To make matters worse, it wouldn’t be a flattering style for anyone but it is an especially bad short haircut for women with a long face.
Just like Milla’s undercut pageboy, this look robs you of tons of volume. Then, as the icing on the cake, the all-one-length side swept layer in the front will just serve to elongate your face. This is definitely one to avoid at all cost.
5. Straight Blunt Bob
While Peaches Geldof’s blunt cut wavy bob looked amazing with a center part, Jennifer Garner’s straight hair just looks drab. Her hair is too thick and straight for this style. Between the straight blunt cut and the center part, it looks incredibly bulky at the bottom.
That wouldn’t be a big problem for a woman with a heart shaped face but it’s exactly what you want to avoid when you have a long face. Her hair is also totally flat at the sides and on her crown so it just sits flatly on top of her head. A few layers here could change everything.
Square Shaped Face
If you have a square shaped face, your forehead, cheekbones and jaw are all the same width. While it’s similar to a round face, there are a few important differences. Square shaped faces are characterized by angular, sharp features. If your nose and jawline are soft and rounded, you probably have a round shaped face.
Not sure what your face shape is? Look at pics of celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie, Isabella Rossellini, Nicole Richie and Olivia Wilde. Look at the widest points of their faces. If you take a close look, you’ll see that their sharp jawlines and wide foreheads make a square like shape. You’ll see this facial shape on tons of models and celebs because it photographs extremely well.
Celebrities With Square Shaped Face
5 Short Haircuts for Square Shaped Faces
1. Angled Bob
While blunt cut bobs can be too harsh, angled bobs are perfect. They are one of the best short haircuts for women with square shaped faces because they elongate the face. The long layer in the front will soften your face and give the illusion of length.
Because you have a strong jawline, you’ll find that hairstyles that fall below your jaw will be the most flattering. If you get a bob that stops at your chin, it’s going to make your face look too wide. To counter your angular, sharp features it’s important to always focus on feminine and soft styles.
2. Wavy Asymmetrical Bob
Okay, this might be a faux short look on Rosario Dawson but it’s absolutely amazing nonetheless. While we would love to see Rosario make this look a reality, let’s just work with her faux wavy asymmetrical bob in the meantime.
This is a great short hairstyle for women with square faces because it’s soft, feminine and falls just below the jawline. It’s the perfect length and style for wavy hair because the layers stop it from getting too bulky while the length creates weight below the jawline. While Keira’s ultra-sleek angled bob can be high maintenance, this look is ultra-easy to maintain.
3. Lopsided Bob
Want something more modern? Lopsided bobs have been trendy for years and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. French beauty Marion Cotillard’s hair has all of the same flattering aspects as Keira Knightley’s angled bob. It softens her strong angular features while creating a fashion forward, easy style.
Lopsided bobs are a great, low commitment alternative to undercuts. They are easy to grow out and will give you a wide range of styling options. As far as short hairstyles for women with square faces go, bobs are generally flattering and simple to style. Avoid anything that hits your jawline, but beyond that, go crazy with different lengths and textures.
4. Sleek Short Crop
If you are ready for a seriously short cut, check out Ashlee Simpson’s sleek short crop. It’s one of the most flattering super short haircuts for women with square faces. Her side swept bangs create a soft, feminine look to her angular face while the ultra-short back draws attention to her strong, flawless jawline.
This is a particularly amazing style for women with fine hair. Rather than fighting for volume, go for the sleek look that works with your hair’s natural shape and texture. While this cut would be high maintenance for women with curly or wavy hair, it’s basically a wash and go look for ladies with fine, straight hair.
5. Shoulder Length with Side Swept Bangs
I suppose it is debatable whether or not Olivia Wilde’s shoulder length haircut qualifies as a short ‘do. The timeless, ultra flattering quality to her style is certainly not in question though. Like Ashlee Simpson, Olivia is using side swept fringe to soften her angular features.
By keeping the weight of her hair at her shoulders, she is also flattering her strong jawline. This effortlessly chic look is especially great for women with wavy or curly hair. Ask your stylists to add a few very subtle layers to prevent this style from looking too bottom heavy. If you have fine hair, go for a few extra layers.
5 never get short haircuts
for square shaped faces
1. Masculine Pixie Cut
Wow. Sorry, Isabella Rossellini, but you are hardly recognizable here. The best short hairstyles for women with square faces are feminine and soft. Everything about Isabella’s look in this picture is harsh. From the severe contrast between her pale skin and the dark hair to the overwhelmingly dark outfit, everything is off.
While women with square faces can pull off pixies cuts, the way that she has styled this is far too masculine. Her look comes across as dated and it ages her far too much. Ditch the hair product and go for a softer color palette to make this look work.
2. Fringeless Style
The normally stunning Olivia Wilde made a rare mistake here. While the slightly bumped up crown redeemed the look a little bit, the whole thing is still a mistake. Because women with square shaped faces have a wide forehead and strong jawline, it’s important to have some fringe or at least a few face framing strands.
With all of her hair pulled away from her face, Olivia’s jaw looks incredibly strong and masculine. Regardless of your haircut, it’s important to have some hair over your forehead or jaw to soften your face. Up-dos are still very possible but go for a top knot or side swept pony.
3. Asymmetrical Bowl Cut
This is easily Cate Blanchett’s worst look ever. The best thing that I can possibly say about this style is that it’s a bit different from the standard bowl cut. Your mom could probably not achieve this asymmetrical bowl cut in the kitchen with her old sewing scissors.
All in all, this look is a total disaster. Cate normally goes for a very soft and feminine look from head to toe so I don’t know what happened here. While this could be an okay look for a woman with a rounder face, it’s far too severe for Cate’s strong features.
4. Rounded ‘fro
Solange Knowles is another normally uber chic star done wrong by her stylist. While Solange’s natural ‘fro style is usually gorgeous, this is an awful shape. She has looked amazing with similar styles but this cut has way too much bulk at the bottom.
For women with square faces, it’s important to keep weight away from the jawline. While you’re lucky to have a strong jawline, it’s good to have balance. If she chopped off the bottom couple of inches of this ‘do, Solange would be back to her normally flawless self. If you want a similar style, stay above your jawline.
5. Pixie with Fringe
I just can’t get on board with Keira’s ultra-short hair. She might have loved this look for a while but her longer asymmetrical bob was far more flattering. This style just totally falls flat. There is no body or volume.
All of that combined with a cut that lands above her ears, puts all of the focus onto her jaw. While her strong jawline is definitely one of her best features, it looks way too pronounced with this cut. A shorter hair style that could be worn upward would be infinitely more flattering.
Oval Shaped Face
Congrats, oval shaped beauty! You have what is probably the most coveted facial shape of them all. You are in good company with some of the most stunning women in the world. Gorgeous gals like Charlize Theron, Emma Watson, Rihanna, Kate Middleton, and Jessica Alba all have oval shaped faces. It’s one of the easiest face shapes to work with because everything is already pretty much in balance, so you aren’t trying to enhance or minimize anything.
An oval shaped face is characterized by a width that is about a third of the length. In other words, your face should be three times longer that it is wide.
Celebrities With Oval Shaped Face
5 Short Haircuts for Oval Shaped Faces
1. Wavy Layered Crop
Charlize has volume in all the right places with this wavy layered crop. This is a great style for pretty much any face shape and hair type. While it might require a little more styling in the morning for women with fine, straight hair, it’s ultra-easy for anyone with wavy hair.
There is just enough length to keep the style visible while the heavy layering creates an incredibly flattering look. It’s a great short haircut for women who have always had long hair because it will leave you with face framing strands so you don’t feel “naked” after the big chop.
2. Blunt Bob
Want a little more length? A blunt bob that falls above your shoulders is a great short hairstyle for women who aren’t quite ready for a pixie cut. All-one-length styles will slightly elongate your face without overwhelming delicate features.
Be forewarned though, this style won’t work well for extremely curly or stick straight hair. Curly hair in a blunt bob can create a triangle shaped look while ultra-straight hair will just fall completely flat without a little layering. Go for this style if you have a little bit of natural volume to your hair.
3. Layered Shag
This updated take on the old Rachel style cut is incredibly flattering. If you are self-conscious about wide cheeks or a double chin, go for a layered shag. Since this look falls just above your shoulders, you will still be able to do a few up-dos. Track down a truly great stylist to get it and it will require basically zero maintenance.
With the right layers, your hair will fall into perfect angles. It’s also great for creating volume and movement so it’s a go-to cut for anyone trying to deal with flat, lifeless hair. Wavy haired ladies can also pull this off but it’s a high maintenance look for curly hair.
4. Angled Bob
Oh, the angled bob. It can always fix what ails you. Slim your face down and look effortlessly chic with this ultra-modern ‘do. The long front layers create the illusion of a thin, balanced face.
Beyoncé looks flawless with this style and it will work just as well for most women. She is rocking a perfect length here that will still allow you to put your hair up while requiring little more than a round brush or a flat iron for days when you want to leave it loose. For oval faces, keep this style somewhere between your chin and shoulders.
5. Side Swept Crop
This is an ideal short hairstyle for women who want a stylish wash-and-go look. The side swept bangs flatter Jessica Alba’s face while the back is basically zero maintenance. It’s a great alternative to a pixie cut because the fringe in the front will still give you a little bit of hair to work with.
If you are self-conscious about a large nose or chubby cheeks, go for side swept bangs to elongate your face and create balance. Since it’s such a short style, it will work with basically any hair type and texture though you will be better off if you ask for extra layering if you have really thick or curly strands.
5 never get short haircuts
for oval shaped faces
1. Ultra Short Pixie
Oh, Charlize, why? Basically everything is wrong with this hairstyle. Despite having ultra-short locks, she manages to squeeze in three different hair colors onto each strand. While it could have been a chic pixie cut in another life, it looks like it was cut with some sort of vacuum hair chopper from a late night infomercial.
To prevent looking like you are growing out a buzz cut, ask your stylist for some layers. Charlize might still look gorgeous with a bald head, but the rest of us need a few strands around the face. Go for a short side swept fringe or just add a little more length for all-over volume.
2. Straight Blunt Bob
Julianne Hough’s blunt bob is simply doing nothing for her. It is clear proof that what works for your friend might not work for you. While a blunt bob can be an amazing short hairstyle for women with oval faces, it’s definitely not for everyone. Julianne’s short hair has no movement or body with a blunt bob.
And the razor cut ends just adds insult to injury. The combination of her fine hair with the straight across cut done by a razor makes her hair look damaged and fried. If you have fine hair, be very careful with razor cuts. They are fine for layered looks but blunt styles can make your hair look aged and weak.
3. Undercut Pompadour
Rihanna’s undercut pompadour actually did look fresh and interesting on the red carpet. It’s an amazing look to rock on stage or at an awards show. It’s not so great for everyday life. While ladies with an oval shaped face can pull it off better than anyone else, it’s just not a good look.
The gravity-defying top won’t last for an entire night out and it’s not really a practical office look. It really doesn’t look good when it’s not spiked so it’s incredibly high maintenance. On top of it all, this will not be an easy look to grow out.
4. Long Pixie
Speaking of cuts that aren’t easy to grow out, let Emma Watson’s outgrown pixie cut be a warning to all of us. While Emma will always be gorgeous, this is just a downright terrible look. Women with oval shaped faces are blessed with a great facial structure but this short style will do nothing for you.
With zero volume, your perfectly shaped oval head will look egg shaped and all of your features will seem exaggerated. If you have to deal with growing out a pixie, go up or back with it. Never just leave it lying at the sides of your head.
5. Curly Blunt Bob
If it doesn’t look good on Beyoncé, it’s definitely not going to look good on you. This look might work for women with a heart shaped face but it’s definitely not a good short hairstyle for women with oval shaped faces. There is nothing flattering about putting a triangle of hair around your face.
If you have thick or curly hair, insist that your stylist use thinning shears near your ends so that you don’t get this pyramid look. Regardless of your hair type, if you have an oval shaped face, focus on creating balance. Stay away from anything too bottom heavy like what we see in this style.
Round Shaped Face
If you have a round face, your forehead, cheekbones and jaw should all be a fairly similar width. This is also true of square faces, which are the same width from forehead to chin. The difference between a square face and a round face is that a round face will have soft features while a square face will have more angular features. Also, rather than being angular, your jawline should feel slightly rounded.
If you’re having trouble deciding on your face shape, pull up your hair and take a head-on pic of yourself. There are tons of great websites that will analyze your face shape and help you decide. Here are a few famous round faces to give you an idea of what to look for.
Celebrities With Round Shaped Face
5 Short Haircuts for Round Shaped Faces
1. Bob Haircuts for Round Faces
Bobs are generally considered a terrible short haircut for women with round faces, but Cameron Diaz looks flawless with her short do. The key to pulling off a short bob cut is all in the details. First off, the reason why hair experts generally recommend against bob haircuts is because they add bulk to the side of your face.
That’s not really a good thing if your face is already round. Cameron is making the style work by adding subtle layers and keeping it at chin length. Her side-swept bangs also create the illusion of length. If you love bobs, ask your stylist for a softer cut and avoid harsh angled bobs.
2. Pixie Cut for Round Face
Ginnifer Goodwin is another round faced celeb, who was able to take a style don’t and turn it into something amazing with a few little tweaks. Round faces tend to overwhelm a pixie cut. The key to making a short cut work is to add as much volume as possible. Ginnifer’s stylist used the same tricks that you saw in Cameron’s bob cut.
Again, there are side swept bangs and subtle layers. By keeping all of the volume on top, Ginnifer hasn’t added any weight to the side of her face. Instead, the soft layers on top add height and create the illusion of a longer face.
3. Pixie Cut with Bangs for Round Face
Jenna Elfman’s ultra-modern pixie cut is one of my favorites. It has all of the fashionable, fierce elements of the old-fashioned pixie like Ginnifer Goodwin’s style, but with an uber trendy edge.
This is one of the easiest short hairstyles for women with any face shape to pull off. It’s especially great for those of us with fine, blonde hair. Ginnifer Goodwin’s pixie is perfect if your hair is a bit thicker but Jenna’s is ideal if you want to make the most of your fine hair while minimizing a round face. And, again, the side swept bangs are in play here.
4. Sleek Angled Bob
Not ready to chop it all off yet? A-line cuts are the perfect intro to short hairstyle for women who aren’t quite ready to take the plunge. You’ll be able to keep a bit of hair in the front, and then decide if you want to go shorter.
If you decide you’d rather stick with a longer style, you can have shoulder length hair within a couple of months. On top of being a great transitional cut, it’s incredibly flattering. The long layers in the front lengthen your face and the short simple layers in back are ultra easy to style.
5. Mohawk Can Work for a Round Face
Are you ready for a seriously bold style? Why not get a little inspiration from round faced star Miley Cyrus! Love or hate her fashion sense, she has had pretty much every haircut out there.
If you want one that will totally transform your look, go for a feminine Mohawk or undercut. Not only is it a serious statement look, it’s incredibly low maintenance. You basically just need to rub some gel through your hair and you’re ready to go. Don’t make Miley’s mistake of growing the top too much longer than the sides. Stick with a subtle Mohawk or simply keep your hair long and get an undercut.
5 never get short haircuts
for round shaped faces
1. Circular Cut
The worst haircut for women with round faces is a circular cut. This style doesn’t actually look too bad on Ciara because she has an angular face but it’s the opposite of what you want. If you take a close look at her cut, you can see that it’s basically a circular shaped piece of hair around her face. That’s truly the last thing that you want. Remember, it’s all about contrast.
A round shape contrasts with her features and softens them. You don’t necessarily need a harsh style but you should definitely avoid anything that is too fluffy and round. If the cut were a bit longer, it could work for a woman with a round face, but the last thing that you want is to add bulk around your cheeks.
2. Short, Round and Curly Haircut
Keri Russell definitely got a ton of bad press for this haircut and it’s easy to see why. It’s an awful style on so many different levels. First things first, you should never cut your hair that short if it’s curly. It just won’t work.
Generally anything above shoulder length is going to require some serious styling if you have tight ringlets but you might be able to pull off something a few inches longer than Keri’s incredibly short style. As far as a haircut for a woman with a round face, this is just a nightmare. Again, it’s got a perfectly round shape. The last thing that you want is round hair.
3. Wavy Layered Bob
If you’ve been paying attention, you probably already know what the problem here is. Lauren Laverne is bringing all of the weight of her hair to the sides of her face. And that’s not even the worst thing about this cut. While her hair doesn’t really look that bad here, it’s exactly what you don’t want from a hairstyle. She has clearly spent some serious time styling it and it’s loaded down with hairspray.
Once she washes it, her fine blonde hair is going to fall to the sides of her head and stick there lifelessly. It’s important to get a cut that works with your hair. Don’t live with a cut that needs to be styled for an hour to look okay.
4. Retro Hairstyle with Volume
From the best cut to the worst! There is nothing about this look that suits Miley Cyrus. She looks like she gained twenty pounds and transported herself back to Texas in the 1970s. Remember, a flattering look is all about contrasting and complementing. Miley’s hair is far too round to suit her round face.
The cut itself might be okay but she’s added far too much volume around the sides while styling it. The color has a similar issue. Rather than complementing her face, it just blends into it and makes her whole head look like one big circle.
5. Bob with Fringe
The key message to take away here is that less is more. A few subtle layers are great. A casual side swept bang is going to look stunning on you. Anything more is going to completely overwhelm your face. Kelly Osbourne has had some fantastic hairstyles. This was definitely not one of them.
The best short hairstyles for women with a round face shouldn’t have any rounded aspects. A little wave is great but don’t go crazy with your curling iron or you’ll make your face look far rounder than it is. Aim for subtlety and avoid harsh lines.
Triangle Shaped Face
First things first, let’s get some terminology straight. It’s important that you don’t confuse a triangle shaped face with an inverted triangle shaped face. An inverted triangle shape has all of the characteristics of a heart shaped face. Some pros say that you can only have a heart shaped face if you have a widow’s peak.
Let’s let those heart shaped ladies deal with all that. If you have a triangle shaped face, your jawline is wider than your forehead. Triangle shaped faces are also called pear shaped because of their similarity to the fruit’s shape. Celebs like Kelly Osbourne, Raven Symone and Minnie Driver are great examples of this type.

5 Short Haircuts for Triangle Shaped Faces
1. Inverted Bob
An inverted bob is a perfect short haircut for women with triangle shaped faces. It’s important that your cut falls below your chin though. If your hair is chin length, you will just draw more attention to your jawline and it will make your face look out of balance.
Add weight under your jaw line by having your hair cut about a half an inch below it at least. Chelsea Kane nails this look. Not only does she have the perfect length, she also does a side part with side swept bangs, which is incredibly flattering for triangle faced ladies.
2. Modern Bouffant
If you are looking for the perfect short hairstyle for women with a triangle shaped face, look to Kelly Osbourne. Not only is she a perfect example of someone with your facial shape, she has also had a massive range of hairstyles. Check out her styles throughout the years to get an idea of what you love and what you hate.
Her modern bouffant was definitely one of her best looks. This is a great short hairstyle for women with triangle shaped faces because it creates volume at the top. You have a wide jaw and a narrow forehead, so this is perfect for creating balance.
3. Sleek Crop
This sleek crop was another win for Kelly Osbourne. Just like her modern bouffant style, the sleek cropped cut creates weight at her crown. By adding volume up top, she has minimized her wide jawline. This is one of the most flattering short styles for any facial shape because it has volume, movement and side swept fringe.
It’s also chic and low maintenance. What more could you ask for from a hairstyle? While most short hairstyles require you to become BFF with your stylist, this look can go quite a while without trims and still look amazing.
4. High Afro
Raven Symone’s natural afro style is the perfect short haircut for women with triangle shaped faces. The key to her amazing style is that her hair is cut above her chin. Just like Kelly Osbourne’s modern bouffant and sleek crop, this creates a balance to her strong jawline.
With so much volume at the top, her jawline looks totally in harmony with her face. If anything, she could go a bit shorter. The best cuts for this facial shape will fall above the ear or below the chin. Anything between the bottom of the ear and the chin will create more weight around your jaw.
5. Wavy Layers
This is an ideal short hairstyle for women with curly hair and a triangle shaped face. Since Minnie Driver has such a strong jawline, her best haircuts are either super short or nearing shoulder length. Never forget the ear to chin danger zone! This is especially true for ladies with curly hair since it tends to be much thicker. Minnie’s layered hair takes all of the bulk away from her ends.
Rather than creating a bottom heavy look, which is all too common with curly hair, her hair is layered to perfection. And her bangs are the perfect finishing touch for creating balance to her jaw.
5 never get short haircuts
for triangle shaped faces
1. Slicked Back Style
Remember Raven Symone’s gorgeous natural afro style? If that was the only style that you had ever seen her with, you might be surprised that she has such a narrow forehead. With all of her hair pulled back, her face looks harsh. Up-dos are definitely possible for women with triangle shaped faces but this look is just far too severe.
Go for a high top knot or bun to create balance on top. Whatever your length, be sure to keep volume at the top of your hair. Simply doing this same style with a sleek side part would have totally transformed her face.
2. Short Pageboy
From the best of Kelly Osbourne to the worst, this style is a “don’t”. While Kelly does have a lot of volume at her crown, this look completely falls flat. Her ultra-short pageboy haircut looks like a wig that’s just a little too small for her head. Because Kelly has a strong jawline, a more layered look would be infinitely better for her. And, as the name implies, the look is also too boyish for her.
The strong jawline of triangle faces is definitely better off with softer, more feminine styles. If her layers were more feathered down the sides, it would break up the choppiness of this look.
3. Ultra Short Graduated Bob
Sorry, Kelly Osbourne! The Fashion Police star normally knows a thing or two about style, but even the best of us have our off days. Kelly’s look here combines all of the worst elements of a bad short hairstyle for women with a triangle shaped face.
If this cut were a little bit longer, it could actually work well for her. Falling between her ears and chin, though, this look makes her already wide jawline look much broader than it actually is. If her cut fell underneath her chin, it’d be perfect, but instead, it looks like a strange shrunken down haircut.
4. Undercut Pixie
While Fantasia Barrino has added some volume to her crown, it is not nearly enough. Her prominent jawline steals all of the attention away from her other features. Having an undercut this short- and on both sides no less- is extremely hard to pull off. This is doubly true for her facial shape in particular.
It is truly a terrible short haircut for women with a triangle shaped face. If you really love her undercut look, go for a style that is longer on the top like Kelly’s modern bouffant. This ultra-short pixie cut is nearly impossible for anyone to pull off so don’t even try unless you have very delicate features.
5. Center Part
It’s hard to tell how long Minnie’s hair is in the back, so it might not qualify as a short ‘do, but it most definitely qualifies as an unflattering cut. For women with a triangle shaped face, a center hair part is unflattering in any style.
Always go for a flattering side swept bang or just a blunt cut of fringe across your forehead. Minnie’s style here only serves to highlight the fact that her forehead is much narrower than her jaw. Even if you don’t like having bangs, part your hair off to the side so it sweeps across your forehead to create volume.
