Breaking Down The Brazilian Butt Lift Trend

Some people will stop at nothing to get a bigger bum—even if it means turning to plastic surgery. Here's all you need to know about Brazilian butt lift.

Studies show that, in 2014 alone, the number of rear-related plastic surgery procedures had increased by over fifteen percent, and that number has only continued to rise. Much credit is owed to the Kardashian clan for the rising popularity of colossal derrieres.

When Kim Kardashian first came onto the scene, it was her big booty that made headlines, and since then, it’s only gotten bigger and made her more famous.

Other members of her family—such as Khloe Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and even soon-to-be-sister-in-law Blac Chyna—have followed suit in having ever-expanding backsides seemingly overnight.

One has to question whether or not a bum of that magnitude is even attainable naturally, or if plastic surgery is responsible for their ample assets.

It’s no secret that Brazilian Butt Lifts, also known as BBLs, have become the latest trend in plastic surgery to gain momentum. Presently, surgically-altered bums have become about as common as breast implants as many plastic surgeons have now added BBLs to the list of cosmetic procedures they offer.

There is even a doctor based out of Miami who has made headlines recently for broadcasting his trademark BBL procedures on Snapchat.

While I can understand why someone would want to fix something they find problematic on their own body, I also know that plastic surgery isn’t always the right answer.

The quick fix isn’t always the best and most effective way to be happy with your physical appearance. There are plenty of natural ways to add volume to your behind without going under the knife. Squats are a perfect example of what a little hard work can do to change the appearance of your physique the old-fashioned way.

It seems like these days, there is a fascination with acquiring a bottom that is unnaturally large. Do we live in a world where BBLs have become the new normal. ¬Here are a few things you need to know about this prominent new fad.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A Brazilian Butt Lift is a cosmetic procedure where a plastic surgeon takes the patient’s own fat and uses it to augment the size and shape of the buttocks.

This is accomplished by performing liposuction on certain regions of the body that have excess amounts of fat. The stomach, thighs or hips are the most common areas where fat deposits can be harvested from and then injected into the patient’s posterior.

Surgeons generally remove and store fat from two areas of the body to ensure that they have enough for the transplant to add bulk to the patient’s backside. Further liposuction is then performed to shape, lift and contour the bum to achieve the desired appearance.

What are the risks?

Like with any cosmetic procedure, there comes a multitude of risks when opting to have a Brazilian Butt Lift. Complications that can stem from BBLs range from the aesthetic to more serious in nature. Asymmetry, lumpiness or dimpling, scarring, persistent cellulite and infection are just a few of the downsides of this process.

Infection is a common concern with plastic surgery, and it’s no different with BBLs. If the plastic surgeon fails to sterilize his operating instruments properly, you run the risk of getting an infection. Additionally, you must comply with specific aftercare instructions and clean your injection sites properly in order to avoid impurities.

While scarring is a fairly minimal hazard of this procedure, it is still cause for concern. Though the scars of your incisions and injections can fade over time, you should be aware that these marks are permanent.

When using fat transfers to add shape to your bum, there is a high chance that the injected fat may be reabsorbed by your body, reducing your desired results. This also could lead to revision surgery as well as additional procedures down the road.

There are a lot of great exercises aimed towards toning and lifting your butt without turning toward surgical alterations. The best benefit is that you will be sculpting your booty naturally while gaining muscle, not fat.

1. Lunges: Stand straight with your hands at your sides, then take a step forward with your left leg. You want your leg to bend at the knee at a 90-degree angle. Squeeze your glute muscles. Return to the starting position and repeat the process with the right leg. You can also add dumbbells into the routine by holding one in each hand, strengthening your movements and working your upper glutes.

2. Donkey Kicks: On all fours, keep your hands shoulder-width apart and your knees hip-width apart. Follow this by raising your left leg and pressing your heel back, extending your leg straight out while keeping it straight. Squeeze your glutes, then return to the starting position while keeping your left knee barely off the ground. Try this for 15 reps with each leg. This exercise is good for tightening your lower glutes.

3. Squat Pulses: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes pointed out. Keep your arms straight while holding a weight or dumbbell at your center. Squat down. While remaining in the squat position, pulse up and down five times. Follow this up by getting back into the starting position and repeating the process 15 times.

Choosing plastic surgery of any kind is not a decision that should be taken lightly. You are making the decision to alter the appearance of your body. There is always the possibility that you could be unhappy with the outcome of the procedure. There is also always a chance that your body could reject what is being done, which could result in an array of complications.

Many cosmetic procedures last several years, if not a lifetime. It is important to understand the dangers of following these Hollywood trends and that having a bigger booty this way may not be all that you bargained for. The safest, cheapest and most effective way to get the body of your dreams is to work for it.
