The old saying goes, “You are what you eat.” So, ladies, it’s time to get vibrant, healthy and just a little bit zesty by incorporating oranges into your daily routine. You probably already know that oranges are a great low cal summer snack packed full of Vitamin C. But, what you may not realise is just how beneficial they are for your health, hair, and even your complexion.
We’re going to share some of the most important health and cosmetic reasons to embrace summer’s fab orange beauty trend. Then, we’ll leave you with two awesome homemade orange mask recipes to try out!
Here’s Why You Should Eat More Oranges
Let’s start with your health. Here are just a few ways oranges can improve your overall health:
Arthritis Prevention: Oranges contain anti-inflammatory properties that can help you manage and/or lower your risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Boosts Immune System: The Vitamin C in oranges will increase your body’s production of white blood cells, which will boost your immune system.
Dental Health: Oranges contain calcium, which is necessary for supporting healthy teeth.
Heart Health: Hesperidin, an antioxidant in oranges, can improve blood vessel functions and lower your risk of heart disease.
Prevents Kidney Stones and Ulcers: The high fibre content of oranges is great for discouraging kidney stones and stomach ulcers.
That’s a pretty big incentive to introduce oranges into your diet, huh? But the benefits of oranges don’t stop there…
Oranges Are Amazing for Your Skin
Sure, most fruits are good for skin and hair, but the humble orange truly is a wonder fruit. Why? It’s chock full of ingredients that will supercharge your complexion!
Vitamin C: Take a look at some of your favourite skin products. More than likely, they contain your skin’s bff, Vitamin C. Vitamin helps the body to form collagen, which depletes as we age, and elastin, which will keep your skin looking younger and more supple.
Citric Acid: Oranges also contain citric acid. Citric acid is a hydroxyl acid, which encourages both collagen production and skin cell turnover. This makes it a popular ingredient in anti-aging products as it aids in complete skin rejuvenation.
Antioxidants: Both Vitamin C and citric acid are powerful antioxidants, which can protect your delicate skin from UV damage, pollution, and free radicals that cause premature aging.
Bleaching Agent: The acidic properties in oranges (and other citrus fruits) make them a popular, natural way to lighten the skin and tackle dark spots and other pigmentation issues.
Tip: A lot of ladies trying orange skincare for the first time make the mistake of using just the flesh of the orange in their beauty routine and ignoring the endless benefits of orange peel for the skin. Orange peel is an especially fab ingredient for beauty masks because it contains even more Vitamin C and calcium than the pulp of the orange. Additionally, the rough texture makes it perfect for creating an exfoliant.
And for Your Hair!
Finally, what can oranges do to keep your locks looking luscious?
Combat Hair Loss: A combination of the Vitamin C and bioflavonoids in oranges can increase circulation and blood flow to your scalp thereby stimulating hair growth. Oranges also contain folic acid, another promoter of lush, long, and healthy hair.
Dandruff Control: When mashed into a pulp, orange peel can be applied to your scalp and hair to combat dandruff.
Promote Shiny, Healthy Hair: Along with Vitamin C, oranges are full of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin E. Increasing your intake of these essential nutrients will help your hair stay strong and silky by staving off breakage and dullness.
Now you know just how much oranges have to offer, let’s take a look at two super easy homemade orange masks that’ll tackle your biggest beauty woes in a flash.
#1 Orange Peel Mask for Acne Control, Exfoliation, and Glowing Skin
We’ve just talked about the amazing benefits of orange peel for your skin and this simple orange peel mask is a perfect example. This homemade mask will help to control acne, reduce sebum production, and leave you with clear, glowing skin. We can kick up this mask’s acne fighting arsenal a notch with a teaspoon of honey as it contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties to banish bacteria. A hint of plain yogurt is another perfect addition to the recipe as it contains an alpha hydroxy acid, which encourages exfoliation and stimulates collagen production for smooth, youthful skin. This is one of my favorite orange homemade masks.
You’ll Need:
- Peel of 3 Oranges
- 2 ts Plain Yogurt
- 1 ts Honey
- A Blender
Method:
Start by separating the peel from three oranges and tearing it into small pieces. Give them a quick rinse then lay them out in the sun to dry for approximately three days. Once your peels are dry, toss them in the blender and blitz them until the peels are no more than a fine powder.
Mix two teaspoons of your orange peel powder with two teaspoons of plain yogurt and one teaspoon of honey in a small bowl. Now your orange peel face mask is ready to go! Apply it evenly to your face and leave it for around 25 minutes before washing it off with warm water.

An orange juice mask is a great way to revitalize and strengthen dull and damaged hair. Vitamins B, B12, C and E (found in oranges and lemons) will promote shine and overall hair health while a dash of honey will add much-needed moisture and antioxidants to your hair follicles. Just a touch of olive oil completes the recipe with anti-fungal properties for a healthy scalp.
You’ll Need:
- 1 Orange
- 1 Lemon
- 1 TS Honey
- 1 TS Olive Oil
Method:
Start by squeezing the juice from your orange and lemon into a bowl. If you don’t have a juicer, make sure to do your juicing over a sieve to keep out the pulp. Next, add a tablespoon of honey and olive oil to your mixture, combining them thoroughly.
