It’s not every day you get to read a book penned by a Roman Emperor, but this book and its teachings are as relevant today as when the great Emperor wrote it somewhere between the years 170 and 180 C.E. He wrote Meditations as a source of inspiration and guidance for himself and the book itself wasn’t formerly published until the 16th century, and what a blessing that was. It has since been used by many to inspire them and is said to be Bill Clinton’s favorite book. If it’s good enough for President’s and Roman Emperors, then it’s good enough for you!

This is the moving story of a shy yet intelligent teenage boy’s life as told in the letters he writes to an unknown recipient. This coming of age story is really a story about appreciating life and realizing that all moments are special; it’s about loving and sometimes losing, moving on, and most of all its about living. It is a book about love, honesty, and friendship. This is one of my all-time favorite books; it’s one that I have read many times over, and I always get something different from it each time I read it. It was certainly a book that changed my life and perspective on things. It tells the semi-biographical story of Dan, a popular college student and champion gymnast who feels there is something missing from his life, but he cannot figure out just what. It is not until he meets a mysterious gas station attendant named Socrates that his odyssey really begins. Trust me: This book is gold dust.

At first, this book might not seem anyone’s first choice to be on an inspirational book list. The story of a man and his son trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world does not make for easy reading – especially when you have a brilliant and gifted writer like McCarthy, drawing you in and painting a bleak and frightening landscape, all done with an eerily poetic ease. At times dark and at others just down right terrifying, the ultimate message in this book is an uplifting one of love and hope. This book is truly outstanding.
