Are you bored with the scene outside your window? Do you long for a taste of adventure and to see the world? For most of us the answer is yes, but too few of us know where to begin planning; too few of us are afraid to take the risk and uproot our lives.
I’ll admit, the prospect of leaving your life behind to travel is a scary thing, but it’s also one of the most amazing feelings you’ll ever have.
There are those who say that if you haven’t travelled then you haven’t truly lived, and that’s something I wholeheartedly agree with. Everyone should go travelling at some point in their lives so to get you off the starting line I’m here to encourage and inspire you by sharing these five incredible movies about travelling the world…
#1 Up
Yes, Up is a Disney Pixar film and, yes, it’s aimed at kids, but why should that mean that it’s not still an inspiring movie about travelling the world? Up sees our protagonist, an elderly man who’s just lost his wife, literally uproot himself (and his home!) and set out on the journey he and his wife had always planned to take but had never quite found the time to make. Despite some odd characters such as a boy scout, Kevin the bird, and a pack of talking dogs, Up is a touching story of loss, life, travelling, and finding yourself.
#2 The Bucket List
With a similar theme to Up, The Bucket List sets out to prove that you’re never too old to follow your dreams and that travelling isn’t just for youngsters. When Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson fall terminally ill and cross paths in hospital, they decide that they’re not prepared to just sit around and wait for Death to come knocking. They intend to make what’s left of their time count and do so in fabulous style making you want to follow their journey for yourself.
#3 Eat Pray Love
When Julia Roberts finds herself divorced and feeling lost and confused about life, she decides it’s time for a change. She wants to know who she truly is, where she’s heading and why. She wants to make a change and a big one at that. As a result, she uproots herself and decides to journey across the world in the hope of truly finding herself. Along the way she meets some inspiring people and finds the true value of eating, praying, and loving deeply.
#4 The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Ben Stiller plays Walter Mitty, a daydreamer who’s simply floating through life. His head is filled with elaborate fantasies about romance, action, and heroic deeds; however, day after day, he finds himself sitting at the same old desk. All that changes when his job is threatened however and he’s forced to journey out into the real world, and embark on an adventure more spectacular than anything he could have imagined. Stiller will have you laughing, crying, and cheering as he inspires you with this epic adventure.
#5 Into the Wild
Based on the true story of Christopher McCandless, Into the Wild is an uplifting and moving tale. After graduating from uni as a top student and a successful athlete, McCandless chooses to give up everything, donate his entire $24,000 saving account to charity, and hike to Alaska where he plans to live in the wilderness. The journey and the people he met along the way ultimately shaped McCandless’ life and the story will no doubt get you thinking about what really matters.
Even just reading about these five films has inspired me to hunt down my passport and start reading up on exotic destinations! Fingers crossed I’ve achieved my goal and they’ve done the same for you.
I’ve no doubt that by the time you’ve finished watching even just one of these films, your appetite for adventure will be whetted and you’ll be raring to go. By the time you’ve watched all five, you’ll likely barely be able to stop yourself from booking the trip of a lifetime (and why should you?). One warning however: Once you’ve caught the travel bug, it’s near impossible to shake it off!
