How to Build Self-Discipline

What does it mean when someone is disciplined and why we all want to be self disciplined so badly? It means having the mindset, energy and motivation to persevere with your goals, despite the problems that may and will show up.

It has a close correlation to the willpower that helps us when we are faced with a challenge. Should you eat that delicious piece of chocolate cake while on a diet? Should you check your Facebook 10 times while you are at work? Should you go to the gym when you feel like you want to relax and watch TV shows? These are all questions that determine whether or not you posses self discipline.

We all have inner impulses that tell us should we do something or not, but the problem is when you feel guilt after doing it. That is a sure sign something is not working that well between you and your mind.

Stephen R. Covey once wrote: “The undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites and passions.” If this is the case with you, then let me assure you that you have nothing to worry about, because most people suffer from procrastination, lack of focus and laziness. The good thing is that you have the power to change that.

To have self discipline means that you act based on your brain, not your stomach. To make it clearer, if you feel like having a nap in your office, your brain will tell you that it’s not a good idea and you should not do it. On the other hand, if you are not disciplined, you might as well think: What the hell, I might as well take a nap. And then you do it and feel guilty afterwards for not finishing the work in time.

Rise Above Your Current Emotions

You need to learn to rise above your current emotions when you know that you really need to do something. This is easily said than done, I know it, but one thing can help you a lot. You need to be well aware of your assignments and pay attention on your deadlines that will help you maintain focus and not wander around.

Write Down Your Goals Every Day

Writing down goals every day and thinking about them will help you stay on track. You need to know your mission. Clear writing leads to clear thinking. And clear thinking brings you more discipline.

You also need to pay more attention to the exact situation when the negative behavior occurs. If you do this often you will learn to prevent it, because next time you feel the flow of indiscipline moving towards you, you will react in time and stop it.

Have Friends Around You

Have friends around you who know about your problem and tell them to occasionally remind you of your goals, give you some courage and help you reinforce your commitment when you are feeling low.

Work on Your Weaknesses

Work on your weaknesses that you know you posses such as weakness for chocolate during the brake at work. Next time you have a break, bring from some granola bar from home, so your chocolate craving wouldn’t be that strong. Things like that really work.

Be Consistent

You need to persevere in building self discipline. It is not an easy task, but it’s worth the bother. It will pay off in the long run and you will appreciate yourself more, and as a result others will respect you more as well.

And remember: “The price of discipline is always less than the pain of regret”
