11 Best Hairstyles for Work

Every woman needs to pay attention to her appearance. The big part of it is how your hair looks. If you’re having troubles deciding which hairstyle to wear for work tomorrow, check out these 11 best hairstyles for work.

Remember that how your hair looks tells a lot about what kind of person you are. This is especially important when choosing a business hairstyle. These styles bring success – try them!

1. Move the Hair Away From Your Face

Regardless of length and general style of your hair, when it comes to business hairstyles, the most important rule is to never have your hair falling over your face.

This doesn’t mean that fringe hairstyles are out of the question, just adjust them. The fringe should not reach over your eyebrows. If you have a layered hairstyle, pin the shorter parts or style them with hairspray. You should never be in a situation to have to fidget with your hair or to flip your head to get the hair out of your eyes.

Although this may sound like quibbling, if your hair covers any part of your face you may appear as a person who has something to hide. This is not a message you want to send in the business world. Your face should be visible and open, because that is a quality of a confident professional.

2. The Bun is Always a Good Choice

Bun Hairstyle

Whenever you’re thinking too much about your hairstyle for work, go with a bun. You can never go wrong with it; it is a classical business look.

Some women think that the bun is too strict or too cold. It may actually appear that way, but you can soften it in a couple of ways; don’t make a firm bun, let a couple of locks stick out from it. Just be careful not to cross the line between having a fun hairstyle and being sloppy.

You can also pin your bun with bobby pins with discreet ornaments, nothing too big or too shiny; bobby pins with small flowers the same color as your shirt will do perfectly.

3. And What About the Ponytail?

A lot of people think that ponytails are not really the best hairstyle for work, but I don’t agree. As long as you don’t just tie your hair as you would do if you’re going for a run, a ponytail can look great.

I would choose middle ponytail, not too high or too low. The high ponytail is pretty much a hairstyle for little girls whereas the low one looks like you didn’t want to bother with your hairstyle at all.

4. The Beautiful and Slightly Forgotten Braids

Why don’t women wear braids anymore? They are a beautiful hairstyle and can look very professional. Furthermore, they are a way better choice than a ponytail if you want your style to last longer without hairsprays and gels.

There are so many different braid styles you could try; my personal favorites are the Dutch braid and the Fishbone. You can also make a bun out of one or more braids that always looks great.

Decide for a braid as a hairstyle for work every once in a while. If you’re feeling creative and would like to try something new, check out this Dreamweaver Braiding for some great braiding instructions and interesting styles.

5. Inverted Ponytail

When ponytail will just not do, try inverted ponytail. It’s very easy to make and it looks really great. However, you will need to buy this tool to make your inverted ponytail. If you can’t find it, you can make it yourself. Just take a thicker but flexible wire and make a loop. Twist the ends of the wire around the loop so that you don’t have a chance to hurt yourself with it.

Make a looser ponytail, so that you can insert the tool between the elastic band and your head. Now pull the hair through the loop of the tool and then pull the tool down. You will basically pull the whole ponytail through the space between your head and the elastic band and create an interesting and beautiful hairstyle. You can even make it without the inverting tool, although it is a bit trickier.

6. Side Ponytail

Give a little twist to your ponytail. Try making a side ponytail for your work hairstyle tomorrow.

The hairstyle couldn’t be any easier to make really. You just need to take all of your hair and tie it on one side, just below your ear. That’s all there is.

Of course, you can add more into this hairstyle. If you have some extra time you can make waves on your hair and make a wavy side ponytail. That looks amazing. If you’re wearing fringe, put them on the same side the ponytail is tied to. Apply little hair spray or gel to make sure that the fringe stay in place.

7. Wrapped Ponytail

There is another great ponytail style for work. I personally love this hairstyle. It looks great and you’ll need a few seconds more than you need to make a regular ponytail.

Take a thin hair band and tie a normal everyday ponytail at the middle of your head. Now take one 1” thick section of your hair and wrap it around the hair band to hide it. Take a couple of bobby pins and pin this section of your hair below the ponytail. Voila – it took you just 5 minutes and it’s amazing.

8. Half Up Half Down

This is yet another of my favorite hairstyles. It can be anything from an everyday style to super fancy hairstyle, depending on what you do with it.

The general rule to make it is very simple. Take the upper half of your hair and tie it in a ponytail. Let the lower half hang loose. That’s it – you’re done.

For more variations you can make a braid or a bun of the upper section of your hair. You can also make curls or waves. I love to do this hairstyle as follows – I start as if I would make a French braid and I braid just a couple of sections from the sides. I continue braiding the hair until the end, but not adding additional sections. This one always looks great.

9. The French Roll

The French roll or the French twist is a very classic and sophisticated hairstyle we most likely see on brides. It also makes one of the best hairstyles for work – especially combined with a strict dress code.

It does have a downside though – it’s a bit harder to make and you’ll need more time for it. Also, it’s easier to make it on shorter than on longer hair.

Gather your hair in a ponytail at the nape of your neck. Do not tie it. Take the ponytail and twist it around and upwards. Hold the roll with one hand and pin it with bobby pins with the other. Spray any loose ends with hairspray or pin them with bobby pins as well. You can also make your French roll from top to bottom. Gather your hair at the top of your head and pin it at the nape. Check out this video for instructions.

10. Try Hair Sticks

Hair sticks can be a very helpful tool when it comes to making great hairstyles in an insanely little time. They resemble chopsticks, they are usually made with small ornaments on top and once you learn how to use them, you’ll never put them away.

If you don’t have hair sticks at your home you can practice making hairstyles with simple pencils. There are many varieties, but the bun is probably the easiest one. Gather your hair in a low ponytail. Take the stick and hold it by the head in your right hand. Put it below the ponytail and start twisting. How many twists you’ll make depends on the length of your hair. Pin through the bun from top to bottom and you’ll have a great hairstyle for work within minutes.

You can also easily make a French roll with a hair stick. Find out how on this video.

11. EZ Comb

This is a little gizmo that will make your hair look perfect every day. It is suitable for short, long and medium hairstyles, for straight and curly hair as well. It’s called the EZ comb.

You may have seen this one on TV and thought that it would never work that way. To tell you the truth, it is not as durable as the commercial would have you believe, but yes – you could make some beautiful hairstyles with it. From ponytails, to buns, French twist and half up half down hairstyles in a matter of minutes.  You can order your EZ comb from Amazon and watch the video for instructions to make a lot of different hairstyles.

So, now you have them – 11 best hairstyles for work. There are those that are made easily and those that require more time and skill. Don’t worry if you don’t succeed in making the French roll or any type of hairstyle with hair sticks at first. You will get it.

Which one are you choosing for work tomorrow?

  • No offense but please do not try out No 7; no man I know (including myself) takes that haircut seriously. It belongs to fashion or free time (and even then at least I don’t even like looking at it).

It’s a lot of things, but it doesn’t look professional.

  • I think I should clarify my previous comment a bit: this is not about the wrapped pony tail in general, but the way it’s done in the picture.
