Bangs Too Short: Solutions for an Unfortunate Scissoring Disaster

Someone got carried away and you ended up with your bangs too short! Before you freak out, breathe and relax - we've got you covered.

Someone got carried away and you ended up with your bangs too short! Before you freak out, breathe and relax – we’ve got you covered.

Oh, no! Your favorite stylist had a little slip-up the last time you visited the salon. For whatever reason, she lost sight of your hair and was focused on something else.

Next thing you know she gets a little ‘scissor happy’ and chops off your bangs way too short. She tries to even them out, but then you’re left with a nightmare of a set of bangs.

Or perhaps you decided to take on the challenge of giving yourself a trim at home, but didn’t realize you’re not exactly the world’s best hair stylist and now you’re left looking like a little kid that got into their mommy’s medicine cabinet and played with the scissors.

Either way, accidents happen, but no matter how too short bangs made their way onto your beautiful face, they are an instant disaster. Instead of running off to your room to hide under your blanket for 3 months, let’s find a solution to this problem you can feel confident with.

1. Embrace your new look

bangs too short

Ever heard of ‘baby bangs’? They’re ridiculously short blunt bangs that are cut way above the eyebrow level. And while this may sound like a fashion mishap, it’s actually a really hot trend. Krysten Ritter, Katy Perry, even Beyonce have tried on these edgy-styled bangs and they look absolutely FAB doing so.

They have a certain avant-garde and retro appeal that can be daring, sexy, and completely on-trend. So instead of trying to find ways to HIDE your extra-short bangs, try embracing them and go for an all-new look for a few weeks.

You may find yourself falling in love with this new and hot hairstyle and you’ll want to keep cutting them short for a few more months.

2. Texture the bangs

You will be surprised what a little bit of texturing can do to your hair. The thought of thick blunt bangs send you into fashion-crises mode? Then you may want to try out this nifty trick.

Instead of leaving your bangs completely stick straight above the eyebrow, simply tousle them up a bit. It’s as easy as running your fingers through your bangs and making them, well, ‘messy’.

Give them that bedhead look and you may find the texture gives the illusion of extra length and breaks up the monotony of straight, extra-short bangs.

3. Texture the rest of your hair

The hard thing about cutting your bangs too short is they are the focal point of your face. Everyone is going to notice them first. Their front-and-center location makes it hard to hide a bad haircut. That doesn’t mean you can’t take some of the edge and focus off of your extra-short bangs by texturing the rest of your hair.

By adding more style and depth to the rest of your mane, you can draw extra attention to the rest of your strands besides those super short ones.

That being said, add in some more volume and style to your hair by tossing in waves or curls. Try teasing your hair up a bit for some added volume and contrast to your short bangs.

Styling the rest of your mane in this way can play off those short fringes beautifully for a look you will adore.

4. Curl them off to the side

Curling irons are your best friend, whether you need some romantic curls for date night or some playful tight curls to show off at school. It can even be your go-to for hairstyling disasters like extra short bangs.

Start off by parting your hair off to an extreme side part so the bulk of your bangs are located on one side of the face. Then use your curling wand to curl your bangs up and away from your face.

This will not only cover up your bang situation, but also leave you with a classy and beauteous hairstyle that can be worn to even the most prestige events.

Leave the rest of your hair straight or lightly textured for an everyday style you can wear anymore, or do a glamorous updo for flashy nights.

5. Straighten them

Have you ever had a haircut that looked too short all around, but when you got home and straightened your locks out, it appeared a bit longer?

Sometimes it is as simple as straightening your bangs down to add a little extra length, so give this nifty trick a try. This is an especially good idea for gals who have curly or wavy hair and their bangs are immensely shorter do to their natural texture.

Straighten them down and see if they’re a length you can work with for the next couple of weeks until they have grown out.

6. Rock side bangs

Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, Kim Kardashian: all breathtaking celebrities who have tossed their locks into an EXTREME side part, and looked like exceptionally gorgeous divas in the end.

Side parts are seriously hot and stylish, and they can work wonders for your hair whether you’ve got a lengthy set of bangs or (way too) short ones. Try it out!

The next time you’re getting ready in the morning, try this routine: start with a shower (of course), using shampoo and conditioner as you would normally do.

When you step out of the shower use a comb to part your hair off to one side. And I mean really, really part it; you want most of your hair to be located on one side of your hair, with just a twinge of hair left on the opposite side.

Blow dry your hair, making sure you are swaying your bangs off to one side. This will give the illusion of super sexy and fashionable side swept bangs that can be worn day to night with ease. It won’t even look as though you’re trying to cover up a haircutting nightmare!

Here is how to style side swept bangs.

7. Make bobby pins your bestie

If you weren’t already BFFs with your bobby pins, now’s the time to get acquainted. I mean, after all, they certainly do come in handy, whether you’re trying to pin your hair up into the fanciest updo for prom night or simply pinning your loose strands back to keep them out of your face while you work out.

You can also use bobby bins to your advantage when it comes to your bangs too short.

Use a bobby pin to pin them off to the side, or pin them back and away from the face. Check on Pinterest for cool and unique styles you can work with bobby pins and your bangs.

8. Braid them

There is something so undeniably dainty and feminine about side swept braided bangs. That braid located right at the top of the face creates a very soft appearance that many find very appealing. This is a style you can do in a few short minutes, and it’s great for all occasions big or small.

Leave the rest of your hair straight to give even more attention to the braided bangs, or enhance them with an accenting hairstyle that’s just as fabulous: curls and waves look ravishing, as do fancier updos that take a little extra work.

9. Little bang bouffant

If you’re planning to use bobby pins on your short-bang adventure, I highly recommend trying out a little bouffant. Bang bouffants have been extremely popular in recent years, and you can do it in a few short seconds.

All you need to do is tease the back of your bangs for a touch of sexy height, then pin it back loosely so the teasing can easily be seen. This little touch of volume on top of the face makes it easy to stay in style while also showing off your facial features easily.

Doing a bang bouffant looks extra dashing with some contouring makeup to draw even more attention to your cheek bones, eyebrows, and other lovely features of your face.

10. Headband

Have a few headbands lying around that never really get the attention they deserve? Well, they’ll be your sidekick throughout these trying times of having bangs that are too short.

Headbands make it quick and easy to pull bangs back and away from your face. They do so in such a cute way. Go shopping for some trendy headbands to accompany you through the next couple of weeks.

Accidentally ending up with bangs that are too short can be, well, downright traumatizing. But, that doesn’t mean you have to put a bag over your head.

Try embracing your new hairstyle with some edgy baby bangs. Or, try out some different tricks or methods like braids, headbands, or curls. Just be prepared to wait a few weeks or even months for your bangs to grow back to the desired length you wish to have.

Don’t worry. Styling bangs on your own can be very easy with the right tools and salon days won’t have to be your only good hair day.

  • I have long wavy hair. I let my sister have some fun, and she cut my bangs way too short! I look eight! Trying to find a way to hide it for school…

  • I can’t do any of these things :(
The hairdresser cut all of my hair off, like she gave me a pixie cut and that was totally not what I wanted. I also told her to cut my bangs just below my eyebrows and she cut them over an inch above my eyebrows DX
I’ve tried brushing my bangs to the side, but no matter what I do they still lay flat across and look stupid. I’ve tried wearing headbands but it’s just not my style and they don’t look good on me/don’t match my clothes.

The worst part is, I’m going into my first year of Highschool in a few days and I was already really nervous :'( now I have no confidence and I’m considering just not going

  • I wear my bangs the same length and shape as the dark haired girl in the final photo …it’s like you wrote (accidentally cut too much the first time then started to like it that way). I’ll probably never go back to long bangs down in my eyes; my criterion is they have to be short enough to where I can look up and not even see hair.

  • I definitely got my eye brows done and am really embracing the new hairstyle I am getting tomorrow. New me and new beginnings. I’ve also did the side bang sweep and invested in some new headbands and a few outfits… turned out to be a great beginning of new things that were in store for me. ..
