Top 10 Movies to Watch With Your Boyfriend

Movie night is around the corner and tough decisions have to be made. Can’t decide what movies to pick that both your boyfriend and you would enjoy? Read on and find out.

Ah, the eternal battle of the remote control. Few (lucky) couples have the same taste in TV shows and movies. For the rest of us, movie night equals conflict night.

You could subject him to “The Notebook” or “Sex and the City” but trust me, you’re better off saving these for your next girls’ night in.

Wouldn’t it be nice to pick a movie that both of you can enjoy for a change? Do such movies exist? Why, yes!

Here are my ten picks for movies that both your boyfriend and you will thoroughly enjoy.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

“Memories warm you up from the inside. But they also tear you apart.” Isn’t that the worst thing about breakups? Wishing that you could forget the pain, the memories, erase him/her completely from your mind?

This masterpiece by Michel Gondry explores exactly that possibility. Clementine (played by the lovely Kate Winslet) decides to erase her ex Joel (Jim Carrey) from her mind through a special “procedure”.

When he finds out, he decides to undergo the same procedure. But as his memories progressively disappear, he rediscovers his love for her through the happy times.

Will he be able to save his memories? Will the two reunite? Part romance, part sci-fi, this is definitely one of those movies that both of you will enjoy. It’s sweet,  funny, a little sad and I guarantee that the story of Joel and Clementine will make you fall in love all over again!

2. Warm Bodies

If your boyfriend loves zombies, and you prefer… err… the undead, this is a fantastic movie for the two of you to watch together. While it is your typical zombie movie in some ways, at the heart of it, it is actually a delightful love story.

A (good looking) zombie (Nicholaus Hoult) saves a human girl (Teresa Palmer) from a bunch of fellow zombies. He takes her with him to keep her safe, she stirs up something in him and soon he’s head over heels in love with her.

She lovingly calls him “R”, they have a couple of hilarious adventures together and by the end of it, you’re almost rooting for them to get together. I know it sounds wrong but I promise you by the end of it, you will love zombies just a little bit more.

3. Date Night

If you haven’t watched Date Night yet, you’ve probably been living under a rock at the bottom of the ocean. Both Steve Carrell and Tina Fey are amazing actors in their own right but together, they’re just dynamite!

Date Night is about an average suburban couple and how a regular date night turns into a hilarious misadventure. This is one quirky couple that will have your sweetie and you laughing till your jaws hurt!

4. The Descent

As cliché as it may sound, horror movies are definitely the perfect excuse to cuddle up with your boyfriend on a lazy night. This horror movie involves a group of female friends and their yearly adventure vacation which soon turns terrifyingly ugly.

There are plenty of heart stopping, claustrophobic moments so get ready to clench his hands tight and burry your face in his brave shoulders. Also, a word to the wise: Avoid the sequel at all costs!

5. Amelie

Amelie is one of those movies that you can watch endless number of times and still find something new to love about every single time. Audrey Tautou is delightful as the imaginative, slightly strange Amelie who sets out to make other people happy through clandestine actions.

Enter Nino Quincampoix (Mathieu Kassovitz) who is in every way as strange as Amelie. In the words of Dr. Seuss, “We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.”

Amelie falls in love and what follows is a whimsical journey that will warm your heart. It is a magical movie and I dare you not to fall hopelessly in love with it.

6. Annie Hall

If you love romantic movies, you’ve probably watched Annie Hall more than a couple of times. Time to get your boyfriend to watch this adorable, even if slightly neurotic love story.

Undoubtedly, one of Woody Allen’s finest, Annie Hall tells the story of Alvy Singer and his on-again, off-again love affair with Annie Hall (Deane Keaton). Witty, hilarious and honest, this is one unconventional romantic comedy that doesn’t have a single dull moment and never gets old.

7. The Dreamers

Let me just start by saying that The Dreamers is not everyone’s cup of tea but if your boyfriend and you are in the mood for something a little out there, this may be the way to go.

Set against the backdrop of the political turbulence in the late 60s in Paris, this is the tale of an American student Matthew (Michael Pitt) who meets French twins Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel) who, let’s just say are very very comfortable with each other.

It quickly becomes a threesome of sorts with tons of nudity, twisted sexual games and shocking moments. Like I said earlier, this one is not for the uptight or faint of heart.

8. 500 Days of Summer

Can Joseph Gordon Levitt do no wrong?! 500 Days of Summer is as real and as delightful as it gets. Levitt plays Tom who is smitten with his boss’ secretary Summer (Zooey Deschanel).

Despite being seemingly perfect for each other, his love is more or less one sided. He loves the idea of soulmates and tries his best to prove to Summer that she is his but as luck would have it, she doesn’t believe in the idea of true love.

Levitt is an absolute cutie, Zooey is adorable as always and the soundtrack will have you humming for days to come!

9. 28 Days Later

Most zombie movies are predictable and don’t exactly rank high on the scare-o-meter.  Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later” is an exception. These zombies, or “rage virus” victims are (very) angry, scary and will give you the chills like nothing else.

If the sight of blood makes you queasy, you may want to give this one a skip. If not, bring out the popcorn and sit very, very close to your boyfriend…

10. Before Sunrise

I’m going to end this list with my favorite, Before Sunrise. Few movies have affected me so deeply and while that may be for personal reasons, I think every couple will inevitably fall in love with the story of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke).

The story is quite simple, an American boy meets a French girl on a train, feels an instant connection, asks her to get off with him and the duo spend the rest of the day exploring the gorgeous city of Vienna and falling in love.

What makes this simple story so special is the very real chemistry between Celine and Jesse, the innocence of young love, and the fact that you can’t stop watching the movie even though technically, it’s just one long, beautiful conversation. It’s a wonderful, albeit slightly sad movie and if your boyfriend loves this, he’ll love the sequel even better!

And that brings us to the end of this list. I hope your boyfriend and you enjoy watching these movies together and I hope movie night is never dull again!
