Shoes to Wear With Your Maxi (And What NOT To Wear!)

There’s nothing like a ridiculously cute, comfortable, and fun maxi dress or skirt. But if you’re not wearing the right shoes, you could go from fab to drab in a flash! Find out the top 3 shoes to wear with maxis - and what shoes to avoid.

Ladies, it’s time to be honest: we’re obsessed with maxi dresses and skirts. Who could blame us though? Maxi dresses and maxi skirts are seriously the most comfortable and flattering clothing items on the market and there are TONS of adorable patterns and colors. But if you’re not wearing the right shoes, you can turn your fashion win into a fashion fail in a matter of seconds. Avoid this potential fashion faux pas with these shoes to wear with your maxi.

Must Wear: Flirty Flat Sandals

Is it just me, or do flats work with ANY outfit? If you have a love affair with flat sandals, you’ll be happy to know that flats are an absolute YES when it comes to maxis. Plus, there are so many styles to choose from and they all work beautifully with your fav dress or skirt. Go subtle with a few flashy jewels like the flats you see here, or be brave and try out one of the latest trends: the gladiator sandal. Really, any of these styles will do!

Don’t Wear: Boots

Most women are obsessed with boots. I mean, they have that sex appeal that drives men wild while also giving us a stylish look full of attitude. Unfortunately, when it comes to maxis, we need to steer clear of boots. It just looks funky, bulky and completely untrendy. I can’t tell you enough: Even if you think you might be able to pull it off, you probably shouldn’t. (Why would you want to wear boots in gorgeous summer weather anyways?)

Must Wear: Work It Wedges

The best way to describe wedges? Hot. These glamorous shoes have just the right amount of chic attitude to amp up your style in a flash. They work wonders with maxi dresses and skirts, giving them some extra length so they flow gracefully with the beach winds. Feel free to pair an aztec skirt with a pair of white and tan wedges like the ones shown here, or wear a pastel maxi and finish off the look with a cute pair of floral wedges. So many adorable combinations!

Don’t Wear: Sneakers

If you know anything about fashion, this probably doesn’t need any explaining. After all, sneakers should really be left at the gym or with your jeans depending on the type of sneakers you’re wearing. Sneakers with maxis are insanely unflattering and completely rids you of the cute, flirty style you’re trying to achieve with a lovely maxi.

Must Wear: Fashionable Flip Flops

Summer is all about flip flops, right? Who doesn’t love these comfy little accessories that make that beloved ‘flip’ and ‘flop’ sound with every step we take through the sand. We’re pleased to announce that flip flops of all varieties are a must when it comes to maxis. Try a basic color or bust out your wild leopard print flops to impress the crowd. The choices are literally endless, and I know you’ve already got a closet full of flip flops to break out!

Maybe Wear: Hello Heels

Why do I say ‘maybe’ when it comes to heels? For the simple fact that there is a time and a place for heels. For instance, if you’re heading to a somewhat fancy event where a maxi skirt or dress is completely acceptable, then by all means bust out the heels.

But if you’re just doing something casual, it’s best to leave the heels in the closet – unless of course it’s a very low heel. However, you want to stay away from incredibly tall heels and stilettos at all cost. This just doesn’t look right and is not a good match for a maxi.

Now aren’t you excited to plan your latest outfits? Let your creative side out and mix and match to your hearts content. Whether you want to rock a pair of cute wedges, cutesy flip flops, or adorable flat sandals- just keep the boots and sneakers away for another day! What are your favorite shoes to wear with maxi skirts and dresses?

  • I read that it’s generally higher heels that work better for shorter dresses, while lower ones are cuter for maxis. Though I find low or flat heels cuter in general, personally, unless it’s wedges.
