Whether you keep to the staple jeans and a t-shirt or don’t feel comfortable in anything but flats, there are things you can do to pump up your style without going overboard. Check out our style tips and get yourself ready to rock that pavement like it was a runway.
1. It’s all in the shoes, darling

Shoes, my friends, are the perfect accessories for taking your look from 1 to 10. If you keep it simple in jeans and a t-shirt, try pairing a distressed ankle boot, flat or heels to bring out your inner fashionista. The eye is naturally drawn to shoes first, and if you have the right pair, it can pull your entire look together with almost no effort at all.
2. Don’t forget the lipstick
Bright red lips will not only draw eyes to your mouth, but will spice up your look entirely. Keeping it simple with your outfit can make room for a bright red or burgundy lipstick. If you want to take it up a notch, try an ombre lip by watching a tutorial on YouTube. Since it’s in style, there are plenty of videos to choose from!
3. Never underestimate the power of jewelry

The perfect watch or long line necklace can really make any outfit pop. Try wearing several eye-catching pieces with your minimalist clothing to go from simple to glamor girl in no time.
If you wear costume jewelry, though, it’s important that you don’t go overboard and mix genres. If your necklace is gold, don’t wear a silver bracelet. The jewelry must flow together so it doesn’t come off as tacky.
4. Brighten up a bit
If you’re a girl who only rocks one shade at a time, consider throwing in a few different color pieces. This will shake up your look a bit. There is nothing wrong with finding a color you love and rocking the heck out of it, but if your whole outfit is one color, try grabbing a scarf in an offset hue to create a little contrast. It will take your look from downplayed to upscale without having to sacrifice your signature hue.
5. Staple pieces exist for a reason

It’s been said before and I will say it again—if you do not have at least a few basic pieces, you need to head out and get some right now. I’m talking about the little black dress, the white button down and the classic leather (or faux leather) bomber jacket.
Each one of these pieces should be the starting point in your look whether it’s an everyday look or a night on the town. They’re versatile and must-haves in every woman’s closet.
6. Layer it up
Whether it’s a hot or cold day, layering can really add to your style. Pair a lightweight cardigan with your usual tank and shorts for an extra boost. In the colder months, embrace the weather by layering different fits of long sleeves in an array of matching hues and styles.
7. A good pair of jeans goes a long way

Jeans are one of the best items a woman can have at her disposal because they are so versatile. You can go from day to night in a snap with the right pair of skinnies. For day, pair your jeans with an elegant blazer over a feminine chemise; for night, ditch the blazer. Easy as pie.
8. Comfort trumps trends
This is very important to remember when choosing what to wear. Regardless of what you put on your body, you have to be comfortable. If you’re tugging and adjusting all night at your outfit, it’s going to show. Don’t let your clothes wear you.
9. Only wear clothes that fit

If you’re clothes are too small or too big for you, you’re going to look frumpy. It’s an undeniable fact. Figure out what size you are and only buy clothes that fit you. A simple ensemble can look chic as long as you wear the right size.
10. Dress appropriately for your age
If you’re not dressing for your age, it’s going to take away from your overall look. That’s not to say that there aren’t some pieces that can be worn across the board, but if you’re pushing 40 and dressing like an 18-year-old, it’s not going to make you look fashionable; it’s going to make you look out of touch.
11. Don’t forget the grooming

If your cuticle care is nonexistent and your eyebrows haven’t been waxed in ages, there’s a good chance your style is going to look easy. You don’t have to spend hours at the mirror slapping on makeup or at the nail salon forking out money to make sure things are on point, but it’s good to take care of those things to upgrade your look.
Try painting your nails yourself and shaping your eyebrows at home if you’re confident that you know how. A groomed girl is a chic girl.
Try utilizing some of these tips and watch your minimalist style turn fashion mag friendly—unless your blessed with “always on fleek” everything, in which case what’s your secret to looking chic?
